The Sky on Fire by Jenn Lyons

God, I find all the flirting kind of embarrassing and cringey to read. I thought it might be worth it to see what happens when our MC gets kidnapped/returned home, but I do not like her dynamic with Ris. I had my reservations from the beginning where we have to do the obligatory group of people working together, but each is oh so different. We got the hot one, the violent cussy one, the quiet one who speaks in riddles, and the anxious one. I thought it might be worth it to try out Jenn Lyons, but unfortunately this book comes off a little too YA for my taste. I guess besides whatever Ris and Anahrod are going to get up to.

This has put me solidly into a reading slump unfortunately. It just kept chopping and changing story line and characters too much for me

I adore Jenn Lyons' writing, and this book is no exception. The world building is unique, the plot is intricate, and the characters are delightful (even the evil ones). That said, I think it missed a few edits. Something that was said or happened in one chapter might be contracted by a character or the plot in the next, and not in a way that meant the original statement/event was a lie, but in the way that meant something had been overlooked in editing/drafting -- I noticed that a few times. Aside from that there were a lot of simple typos which are easier to overlook, but still took some translating in my head to realize what the sentence was supposed to say. Anyway, if Jenn Lyons is looking for a reader to make sure those plot mishaps don't happen and silly typos are caught before her next book comes out, I'm available and over-eager.

I really love Lyons stories and don't particularly care for her storytelling. The world was original, fascinating, and diverse. I found the romances and some of the dialog/characterization to be cringe. If there's a sequel, I'll probably read it though.

Some uneven pacing but an exciting dragon heist with lovable characters and an exciting world!

In the initial part of the book the setting and premise changed multiple times and it was very jarring. I think that the world could be very cool but it didn't feel like they developed it to the depth I wanted it to be And perhaps part of that has to do with keeping elements of the story a secret until the end but I did not feel like the pacing was very good.
