Best play I have ever seen in my life. I could analyze this content forever.

I saw part one four times in Austin and part two five times. Unbelievably good.

UPDATE: This is the best thing I’ve ever read. It’s truly a masterpiece. All the best words in the best order.

Less intellectually draining than Angels in America and pleasantly wider in narrative scope than The Normal Heart, The Inheritance mostly earns its place in the classic gay plays category. It’s a shame the love for this work seems to have fizzled out over the last few years.

The story is epic and the tone quite literary. The spirit of Howard’s End runs deep in this script. And that’s because the characters are so big, their relationship arcs so dramatic and enthralling.

So the spirit is traditional, but the political discussions and the style are fresh. I wish I could see that playful dialogue structure carried out on stage.

I also wish I could see more female characters in this play…that’s probably my only big complaint. But ok, this one’s for the boys, so be it, whatever.

At times the drama is overdone. Yes, the emotions largely click in the right puzzle-like places (for this play does at times feel like a puzzle, in the best way), but sometimes things stumble into melodrama (like the handling of a certain character’s death at the end…what was that?).

The class commentary is great, even if it doesn’t get at as condemnatory as I’d hoped. It’s all a bit mushy gushy at the end, in fact, but I didn’t hate it.

In fact, I love this play. I love the people in it; I love the way we get to witness their lives cross and fall and change.

So maybe I ought to finally get around to watching that HBO adaptation of Angels in America or, dare I say it…reading A Little Life.

have you ever read something that makes it feel pointless to read anything else ever again? that's how the inheritance made me feel.

lopez covers so much ground in a relatively short length. any list of its themes must reckon with hiv, finding community, suffering, social mobility, the redemptive power of art, our obligations to one another, trauma both generational & individual - the list could go on.

absolutely genius. this will be viewed as a foundational text of queer literature in the same way that tenessee williams and angels in america are in a decade or so.

Blew me away and then wrecked me. Only wish I could have seen this in a production. Probably pre-disposed to like it since it's based on Howard's End, and while it falls into many tropes of cis-white gay male storytelling and themes, I found it compelling and moving.
