Not a fan. The House of Night books started off strong with an originality I had yet to see elsewhere in the vampire world but sadly, the series has gone on too long. This is the ninth book in the series and it could have ended at least 2 or 3 books ago. I feel like the authors are just dragging it on. This book didn't seem to be particularly vital to the plot line, perhaps setting the tenth book up? Hmm, oh well, better luck next time.
medium-paced

(Spoiler Alert *sorta*)
I have been waiting so long for this to come out! My favorite series in the whole world is House of Night and I am just in love with Zoey. She is like my alter ego except I don't spurt magical spirit fireworks and enjoy the taste of blood. Oh and I don't have a cat named Nala or have an awesome arrowboy warrior or have an arch enemy who is out to kill me. The first thing you should know is Do Not Read This If You Haven't Read The First 8 Books. You will get lost really fast and won't enjoy as much as you would have if you read the other ones first. Anyway, if you did then you will really love this book in the series! There is some new people, new problems, and a new adventure, but there is still that old problem: Neferat. Nasty Caniving Little B-word. Yeah she has been consorting with the white bull and the whole world needs to find out!
*Here are my spoilers that aren't really spoilers*
Zoey is going to find out what really happened to her mom. Dragon becomes Bryan. Shaunee will become her own person. Lenobia will be affected by a human male. Rephiam is going to gain something he lost and lastly Kalona will be a warrior again.

Ah hell, is that it? Nope that was just the tip of the iceburg. I bet I really just ruined your day. Now you have the undeniable want to get this book and read it before you explode from suspence!

This series follows Zoey Redbird and her friends as they try to find out the truth about the mysteries of their school and fight the darkness that threatens to destroy all. Zoey is a vampire fledgeling sent to the House of Night to complete the change, learn about the vampire society and understand her new gifts. She is gifted with an affinity for earth, air, fire, water and spirit and is chosen by the goddess Nyx.

Vampires have always existed in a society parallel to the humans. Some great people in history were vampires. It's great to read a series where vampires are not hidden but live in a well known and established society all of their own. This is interesting as it brings some religious fanatics to blame them for everything and some conflicts between the vampires and these fanatics have occurred in the past.

The society worships the goddess of night known as Nyx. They worship regularly at the school and invoke blessing at any opportunity. When it is learnt that Zoey is blessed by the goddess she takes on a strong role as a young Priestess in training assembling her own circle. Her friends Shaunee, Erin, Damien and Stevie Rae who each have been gifted with an affinity for earth, water, air or fire.

This series has lots of suspense, mystery and magic. It has great character development, especially for the main characters. The books are a good length even though there are twelve books and novellas it doesn't feel like a chore and is easy to read. It is one of my favourite series.

This is an amazing series. I give it 5/5.

Happy reading!

Another cliffhanger ending. Arggggh. It's definitely not the end.

Typical plot of the House of Night series. Some improvements on the characters (aka they've grown up and made good choices).

Overall, worth a read if you like the series

great book sad and happy as well

brilliant. the last few chapters were so action packed!!

Okay, I give up. I'm done with this series and I mean it this time. I was ready to drop this book within the first few pages but continued on against my better judgement. I only read to page 113, but please don't tell me I didn't give it a chance. Keep in mind I was ready to drop this series a few books ago, but kept going because so many people said it got better. It did get better. For about a book or two. Then it went downhill fast.
What was my problem with this series? How about the fact that Zoey is a completely overpowered Mary Sue? Or that whenever something horrible happens these characters feel the need to have sex? The first line of the book is Zoey saying her mom is dead. Then she wakes Stark up and he's all LOL WHOO NEEDS SLEEP LETS HAVE SEX. All this happens on page 4. Page. FOUR. Nothing leading up to it, no real reason behind it, just BAM sex.

The only scene I actually enjoyed was Aurox plunging his thumbs Antisana guy's eyeballs. I mean, how cool is that? However, I'm not a fan of Aurox. I was never a fan of Heath and was happy he died. Then they brought him back in the form of an emotionless and spineless zombie for Zoey to save.

I'm not even going to get into the whole problem with the authors continuously using the phrase "we heart ____". I think I've talked that to death. However, a big issue I had with the language this time was the whole argument about the "short bus". My issue was how Aphrodite kept calling it the "retard bus" and the issue was actually brought up by Stevie Rae (who has been getting on my nerves a lot lately) meaning the authors knew it was wrong. Really, authors? You're going to stoop that low? Someone tell me if I'm being over sensitive. I don't think I am, but I really don't care.

Goodbye, House of Night series. I'd like to say it's been fun, but it hasn't.

Well, I finally got around to reading the 9th House of Night book... and it was horrible.
I always knew these books were bad. I kind of thought of them as soap operas; reading them is a mindless task and you definitely don’t learn anything from them, but they’re dramatic and a little entertaining. Or candy. It’s not good for you, but it’s pretty tasty.
But I think I forgot how bad they really were because I haven’t read a House of Night book in over a year.
Back when I first got into them, I sped through them, gobbling them up. They were addicting because the plot was fast paced, and you kind of hated all of the characters but you liked them just enough to stick with them. And the plot was so complex (not in a deep way, but in a there’s so many things happening to so many different characters kind of way) and just interesting enough to keep you captivated and leave you wanting to know what would happen.
When I finished Awakened, and Destined wasn’t coming out for months, I bemoaned how I would handle not immediately knowing what would happen next. I think I even pre-ordered Destined a few weeks before it came out. But I also bought it during a time when I bought dozens (literally dozens) of other books in a short amount of time and I just didn’t feel drawn to it. There were other books that I was curious about, books that were actually good, books that I took something away from other than the things I knew I didn’t want to do with my own writing.
So, staring at my stack of 20+ books, I decided to pull this one out of the heap and finally get it read.
But reading this book was just… painful.
The characters are all so annoying! They make bad decisions and say stupid things and I just want to grab them each by the back of the hair and slam their forehead into a brick wall a few times in the hopes that it’ll knock some sense into their stupid heads. They’re just such unbelievable characters! They don’t talk or act like teenagers; they’re what adults imagine teenagers talk and act like. One of the older characters was talking about their Goddess (so, literally the Greater Being they all worship) and he actually said, “That’s Nyx. She’s awesome.”
As if he were saying, “Oh, that’s my friend Sarah. She’s great.”
And even when speaking directly to figures of high authority they speak as casually as if they’re talking to their friend (oh, sorry, I mean their “BFF”. ‘Cause yeah, that term is used in regular inner and outer dialogue as well. I don't think I've heard the term BFF since I was in elementary school, and even then I wouldn't embarrass myself by saying it).
And the book is so offensive! First page of the second chapter and the main characters are actually making retard jokes. Are you kidding me?! How can you casually do that?
And the only African American characters present are so stereotypical. Kramisha (yeah, that’s her name) actually said “hisself”.
WHAT? STOP THAT.
And I honestly have no clue where the plot is going at this point.
SpoilerThey’ve always been against Neferet, who is clearly insane, and yet she is still somehow the principal of the high school. And they were against Kalona, but then they’re not because he hates Neferet too and is suddenly less evil. And Stevie Rae’s boyfriend was a anthropomorphous BIRD THING (I still don’t know what parts of him were actually human) but now he’s a boy by night and actual full on raven by day. And Zoey is trying to declare herself queen, but of what god(dess) only knows. And suddenly these talking bulls are a central part of the story and it has been heavily implied, if not explicitly stated, that Neferet is actually having sex with one of the bulls (HOW?) and now she has this weird half human half bull thing that has Heath’s soul (Okay, I hated him, and then I felt pity for him, and then he died and I was kind of glad to be rid of him, but now he’s back? WHY CAN’T HE STAY DEAD AND GONE?!)
And even though this is supposed to be this huge battle between Good and Evil, the heroine and the villain spend an obscene amount of time making passive aggressive comments towards one another.
And my biggest complaint? NOTHING HAPPENED DURING THIS ENTIRE BOOK. 325 pages, and do you want to know how the plot was furthered?
SpoilerNeferet may or may not be outed as evil, and Kalona may or may not be able to be trusted, and Aurox may or may not have chosen to have free will, and Shaunee and Erin may or may not be friends anymore (but let's be honest, who even cares? They're possibly the most annoying of all of Zoey's friends, and that's a hard title to come by with so much competition).
BUT THERE'S NOTHING CONCRETE. An entire book and nothing significant happened in the least. I just realized that these books have more in common with soap operas than I thought; they're even written like they're episodes of a TV show. The Cast ladies are not even subtle about the fact that they're dragging these books out for as long as possible to rake in as much cash as possible, good writing be damned.
I really want to see this series through to the end because I’ve put so much time into it, and I’m really curious to see how things finish out, but I'm starting to think my tasty candy just isn’t worth the toothache anymore.

I know most people have been saying a lot of things about these books, but I don't know what to say. All I can say is I can't read any more. This series was good in the beginning but then the Casts just started writing whatever came to mind to create a story. They repeat phrases and things every other page which makes it a hassle for the reader. Then, there is them telling you what happened in previous books like you have never read the earlier books in the series.

All I have to say is that the series could have been saved, but it no longer can. I cannot read them anymore and I didn't even finish this one. I read half of it and said this is enough.
