I struggled with this series, because I watched the anime and liked it.
Unfortunately I read manga terribly fast.
This means that I do not get as attached to characters, and frankly I think that CSM conditions you not to care for characters. This makes “emotional moments” not hit hard for me.
I cared for Aki an amount.
Mostly I just felt pity for him. But he’s the character we spend the most time with who acts like a *person*. But he’s too traumatized and gives into too much of the crazy in order to act as a comparison to the overzealous personalities around him.
His humanity I think makes him the protagonist of this arc more than Denji is.
Speaking of Denji-I don’t think the author has quite decided what to do with him. Even his flaws of wanting to give away his autonomy altogether in order to avoid feeling negative emotion wasn’t really concluded.
Is Pochita being at his heart the reason he lacks empathy?
It can’t just be his stupidity. Does he repress, like with his father situation symbolized by the door? Will he have a breaking point?
Will he actually develop? Why does he continue to trust and trust?
I have to give the first part of the series a 3.1/5 overall.
The art is good. The concepts/ideas solid. I just feel that the writing itself was underwhelming, coupled by the quick deaths that leave you feeling nothing as a reader.
