Pues un thriller. Entretenido, correcto, pero no acabo de entender por qué ha hecho tanto ruido, porque es bastante típico. En cualquier caso, un entretenimiento más que decente si te gusta el género.

I had high hopes for this and I was majorly let down. The writing quality was poor and there were so many characters that I struggled to keep track of everyone. The timeline took place over the course of 3 days, but there is no way they covered as much ground as they did in that little of time. It just felt unrealistic and also like there were some serious breaches of confidentiality/professional going on. The ending was rather abrupt and left lots of plot holes. Just overall a mess. The only saving grace for this book for me was that I liked the plot. Would not recommend.

“Night shift employees attacked with a knife, in each case, a lone survivor.”

“The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places.”

“Good night, pretty girl.”

4.5 Stars Out Of 5

This was my first Alex Finlay novel and it certainly will not be my last. It is so reminiscent of a Harlan Coben mystery, especially Coben’s early books like Gone For Good or Tell No One. The Night Shift has a ton of twists and hooks you in from page one. I loved how part of the book takes place in the era of Y2K and at a Blockbuster before the age of everyone having a cell phone. That was a nice blast from my past!

One of the best things about The Night Shift was how Finlay connects all of the characters and events so perfectly. Again, I will mention Harlan Coben, the master at this. There were so many developed characters in this one; Ella, the troubled psychiatrist and survivor of the Blockbuster killings; Chris, a lawyer whose brother was accused of the Blockbuster killings; Agent Sarah Keller, the pregnant FBI agent in search of the truth as a slaying occurs at a Dairy Creamery in the present day; Jesse, the 17 year old aspiring journalist who is the sole survivor of the modern killings; and Atticus, who is helping Agent Keller with his wide eyed innocence. Amazing job by Finlay bringing these characters to life on the pages.

As I mentioned, this book has some twists and turns. He doesn’t give you all the information at once, but slowly reveals them throughout the book. A lot of the twists I didn’t see coming at all; however, the big reveal I guessed and figured out really early on (go me!). But crazily enough, I wasn’t too disappointed in guessing that because of all the other twists and how good and interesting the book was throughout.

This is definitely an author I will keep an eye on.

For most of the book, I thought it was nothing special, but not offensively bad. Most of the characters feel like extremely shallow cliches, but the main characters have a little bit more going on. Plot was predictable, but done pretty well. Writing is also full of cliches , and has some awkward dialogue. This was headed for 2.5 stars, but I knocked it down because the climax and epilogue were laughably ridiculous.
