I gave myself an evening to collect my thoughts on this book. For the most part I felt like it’s an interesting book. I did have the urge to finish the book, however there are some major problems with Keller and some of the police work in this book. I gave this book a two but it’s really a 1.5.

Major spoilers follow

1. Keller is 8 months pregnant with twins. As a child who has a twin I can tell you right now that multiples can be one of the hardest pregnancies to get through. Saying that. There is no way she’d be working still at 8 months regardless of her drive she could not physically do half of the stuff she does in this book. I feel like the author should have done more research on how the body works during pregnancy. I assume from what the author gives us that this is Keller’s first pregnancy and that in itself can be hard on the body with one developing child but two? she’d literally be huge and it would be painful just to walk around. Any of Keller’s doctors would have told her to stop working and go on bed rest because multiples are usually labeled as high risk especially at her age “In her thirties”. I feel like this would have been more believable earlier on in the pregnancy or right after pregnancy. I would hope the author takes notes on this for the further if he decides to write about a pregnant woman again.

2. Police work in this entire book made me cringe. They literally dropped the ball in the blockbuster murders and an innocent teenager was killed. (I really hated this part) Then you have a junior detective go alone to a suspects house? We know that Atticus couldn’t be sure that he was the murderer but at the same time he would have never gone alone. There is a reason detectives and any law enforcement goes in to interviews with suspects in twos especially when they’re out in the field.

3. There were a few missing links that the author does not tie up. For instance who knocked Chris in the head when he was looking for his brother? this part doesn’t make sense and it feels like it may have been in the first draft of this novel when the Author had plans to keep Vince alive.

4. The end scene was atrocious it felt like the author didn’t have the ability to wrap this sucker up in a nice bow so he decided to kill everyone off except for the pregnant woman. As someone who reads a lot I feel like this could have ended way differently.

Overall, the book had its entertaining moments but it was really hard to get through with everything I mentioned above. Read at your own risk.

“The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places.”

This is my first book by the author! I have been trying to read Every Last Fear but when I saw The Night Shift is coming in early March, I used my audible credit on it and I do not regret doing that. Let me begin by saying that I am not into crime thrillers as much as I am into Psychological thrillers, although lines get blurred most of the times with both the tropes, in-spite of my reluctance I still thoroughly enjoyed this book

My favorite things about the book has to be multiple POV's, I always feel like having a multiple POV's(when done right) takes the thriller element up by a notch because your attention is split between various people diminishing the chances for a reader to see the twist coming. Alex Finlay had done phenomenal job with giving unique voice to these POV's along with connecting them to the plot effortlessly. The second best thing is the 90's nostalgia which somehow helped setting the ambiance of the book perfectly even with the 15 year time jump and back/forth narration!

That being said I have guessed the suspect way early into the plot(*curses self*) BUT the book still managed to keep my attention until the end because the plot has other web of thing going on the parallel, I loved that the author somehow also made the book about redemption, closure and overcoming grief.I was really not expecting this angle and was pleasantly surprised about how much I enjoyed that detail, bare in mind that this book is kind of slow paced for happening over a span of 3 days because it has time jumps, I think reading this via audio somewhat helped with pacing for me personally. I highly recommend the multi-cast audiobook, overall this was a satisfying read!

TW- Parental abuse, physical abuse, cyber bullying(minor) murder, grief and death

Not bad. Some good twist to it. Like the descriptions of a Blockbuster store.

This wasn't it.

Really enjoyed this one! Super fast paced, reminded me of the early James Patterson Alex Cross novels.
