You know how a book stresses you out but is very well-written? Everything I Never Told You is one such book. And while the book draws you in and grips you, I must say also that I don't agree with the choices of several of the characters. It seems to be, however, a very accurate painting of
interracial marriages
especially in the earlier days.

Growing up in an Asian household, however, I must say that the pressure the children here felt is very real. There is always that underlying tension that Asian parents often unconsciouly deliver to their children. "You must be better." "You must get top grades." "You must make good friends." "You must have a respectable career."

I might like this one even more than Little Fires Everywhere. Similar to her second novel, Everything I Never Told You sees Ng dive deep into a work of character study, dissecting all the characters' histories, identities, motivations, fears, hope, and dreams and how these things create a complex, interconnected web of actions and reactions to others.

The Lee family members' struggles w/ the consequences of their race and gender--and sometimes the intersection of both--are sympathetic and frustrating. Ng has a startlingly receptive and accurate way of illustrating the subtleties of feelings and the unsaid, and their effects on one's life and, subsequently, relationship w/ others.

Beautifully written but the plot and characters are a bit one-dimensional and pretty devoid of hope.

We know how the story ends from the very beginning -- "Lydia is dead" -- but the ending is still heartbreaking and surprising. Ng navigates the innermost thoughts and feelings of a family following a shared traumatic event. Racial tensions, gender roles, and family stress are common themes throughout the story. Every character is unique and well-developed. This is my favorite book of all time, and I can't recommend it enough.
