I don’t read a lot of contemporary novels and unfortunately this wasn’t for me — I tried to dig in to Ava’s mentality being so different from mine, and to enjoy exploring that difference. In the end, I think I disliked her too much and was genuinely mad at her for half the book. Not sure if that was the point? I don’t know that I learned anything from it though. If I ponder more and come to any revelations I’ll circle back.

“I thought that if i let anyone in, they’d find out what was broken about me. And then not only would they know, I’d know too.”

2 stars - I didn't hate this, and actually found some parts of the narrator very relatable in how she rationalised certain situations - but overall I just felt meh about the whole story and very ambivalent. Quite a tedious read.

Kind of nothing happened but I seem to like books like that, because it's more like a character study and I did find the characters interesting - even when they're endlessly frustrating and just make bad choices over and over again(!!!!) However, the ending made me happy, and it was gay, and I'm a simple woman.
