3 1/2 stars. Interesting story but overly violent, convoluted yet repetitive in parts, and it took a long time to draw out the conclusion

Too long. Too slow. Too much tedious description. Info dumps masquerading as introspection. Very little pay off for each reveal of a complicated set of circumstances.

A town with a mass murder. Backpacker murders. A drug syndicate. Bikies. And the usual secrets and affairs.

For a town with not a lot going for it, it has a hell of a lot going on it.

This was such a gripping read!  I was pulled into the story right from the start, and it felt like I was in Riversend with Martin.

It’s a slow burn mystery, and I loved the gradual reveals.  The town held many secrets relating to the shooting at the church, and it was so satisfying to see the layers peeled away so that the truth came out.  Even though this is told from only Martin’s perspective, I felt like I got to see so much from everyone else involved in the story & how the events impacted them.

For a book that’s almost 500 pages long, this felt like a very easy read.  I could have easy read this in one sitting.  I thought this was a fantastic example of Aussie Noir and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

This is my second read of this book and I enjoyed it much more the second time around. The plot is complex and there are a lot of characters but it’s a sizzler for those who enjoy crime fiction on the more literary side.
