read this one super slowly. "you know when the men are gone" meets special forces home life. really enjoyed getting to know the struggles of being thrown into military life and reconciling oneself to what that means for one's marriage, for one's life.
This is not a rah rah America or yay US troops book, so if that’s what you’re looking for keep moving. This is a fish out of water memoir, about a woman who doesn’t come from a military family who is surprised when her boyfriend decides he wants to join Special Forces. After a hasty courthouse marriage she finds herself in a role she knows nothing about: the role of Military Spouse.

This book was very hard to get through. While I can't say much in the way of technicalities, there weren't like huge glaring errors..but I just dont vibe with her liberal ish ideals and the whole thing felt very whiney... and like she was set out to spill everyone's secrets and berate others who seemed to genuinely want to be her friend and support her..it just was a bad look..
I really struggled giving this book a three star because over all it was hard to get through and it gave me the ick..but ultimately I decided to go with 3 stars because that's my personal opinion and not that the author did anything wrong .

As an Army wife, Simone Gorrindo offers her readers insight to the challenges the women face when their partners are deployed on missions. They are left to manage the homes, their emotions, and sometimes, the children. Their life isn’t one of luxury; the military stipend doesn’t offer much past the rent. Gorrindo offers a window into this world, and to be honest, it sounded tough - emotional and lonely. The women band together and help ease the burdens, but the truth of the matter is, these women are sacrificing a lot of comfort, ease, and luxury - just like their husbands.
I appreciate the honesty with which Gorrindo writes of her experiences. At times, the book felt a little too long, and by the end, Gorrindo started to inject more and more of her political opinions which felt totally unnecessary given the topic. She also started to victimize herself and it made me feel strangely sympathetic to her husband. By the end, Simone Gorrindo just felt exhausting.
I am forever grateful for the sacrifices that the men and women of the military give to preserve our freedoms in America. This book helped me see that the family members left behind are also making big sacrifices - sometimes missing entire pregnancies, births, and childhoods. I think it’s easy to take our way of life for granted, so for that, I’m glad I read this one.
