I feel like I know a lot better what it's like to be a military spouse now, but I don't feel like I know any of the characters in Simone Gorrindo's book except for Simone and Andrew. Everyone else seems to flit into her life for a paragraph or two, and maybe they come back but by that point I've lost track of them. For a while she was living at a friend's house and that seems like it would be the perfect opportunity to really delve into this secondary character, but instead even she seems kind of flitty. I don't know if this is because of privacy concerns with the military or with her friends or if she never really fit in with her friends. I think maybe it's unfair that I'm comparing this book to a fiction book, but it reminded me of "In a Book Club Far Away" but it wasn't as well done as that, probably because that author picked three people to make sure you knew well. Maybe Simone feels so much for all of these women that she couldn't pick a favorite three, or maybe she really just didn't fit in as she was older and more educated than the other women. But either way, I felt like I needed more characters to latch onto other than just her and her mostly absent husband. Interesting almost insider almost outsider perspective on military life, though, where she lets Andrew's life shine through.

3.75

3.75. Super intriguing and interesting but the tone of the author felt a little harsh at times. I was impressed with her tenacity though and the way she made a life for herself that was nothing like anything she ever imagined. It made me reflect on my own tendencies as a wife and the relationship I have with my husband. The ending where she’s talking about the feeding issue with her newborn hit a little too close to home. Definitely an interesting read and I’m glad I read it.
