I gave up. The translation in this edition is too tedious to be worth struggling through. I'm going to get one of the established ones.

I quit at page 453 after Genji tried to make his adopted daughter have sex with him.

Exquisitely poetic writing buried among excruciatingly hard to read passages, The Tale of Genji took me on roller coaster. I was either on the verge of falling asleep or swooning over how beautifully put and well written the poetry was.
