inspiring and moving in the ways that only intimate oral histories can be

I found this book because my friend asked me for queer British non fic and I realised I had read very little about black queer british history. I landed on this and we both requested it out of our local library. So so glad we both got the chance to read this. Pick it up if you can. A stunning social history.

essential, and vital. the one thing i wish this book had is a visual component; there was so much talk of pamphlets and photos and art, and i wish they'd been included.

Sometimes the answers you seek by burying your head in a textbook can be found, with greater pleasure, over a cup of tea, and two simple questions: 'how are you?' and 'who are you?'

what a lovely lovely record of how vibrant and diverse Black gay community was and is!! such a treat to have found this at my library... I struggle to think of what to write here but I will say this: I sincerely believe that all queer people in the UK, regardless of their race or ethnicity, must read this. we owe so so much to people whose names have dissolved into the shadows of our loud present. I'm ashamed to have been, to still be, even, so ignorant of our history. Whether it's shared or not. thoroughly, thoroughly recommended!!

A rare history book read for me! It’s now made me want to read more history books too, yay!

The strongest thing about this was the framing which lent the book as strong a narrative from both the subjects and the author. The balance of anger, humour, and poignancy in the accounts worked really well.
