I was really excited when I found this book on the shelf in the bookstore because Ursula is my favorite of the Disney villains and I thought it would be really fun and neat to read her backstory. However, I was sorely disappointed. This read like bad fan fiction written by a teenager, complete with a self insert in the form of the author's cat. The story also had very little actually presence of the character it claimed to be about while still managing to have horrible characterization of Ursula when she was in it. It also totally stole Eric and Ariel's heroics and made them tools for these "odd sisters" of the author's.
Terrible book. I'm sorry I purchased and read it.

Really enjoyed this book and the angles it took. It was just so short and I feel like so much more detail could have been given.
It also had a lot of details hingeing on previous books in the series - all of the books in this villain series seem to be connected, but it’s not obvious until you’re already hooked!
Overall a great, fast and easy read - but I would have liked more because sometimes it just felt a bit rushed and surface level.

My least favorite of the series so far. It’s hardly about Ursula, and more about side characters from previous books. It’s still fun, but definitely not as good as the first 2 books.
I didn't understand what was going on throughout the book. I don't think all these extra characters needed to be in the book. I wish it would've been more like maleficents story where you see how she grew up and what happened to make her evil. you got a glimpse of it in this story but in detail like I would've liked !
Less of an origin story and more of a regurgitation of scenes from the original movie, an absolute mess of a narration with seemingly zero proof-reading, and a random story about OCs that for the life of me, I could not understand the reason for their existence in supposed Disney background explorations. Glorified fanfiction at best, and that's doing a huge disservice to fanfiction. Nothing I found online told me this was the third book in a specific trilogy instead of just part of a series so I was completely confused, but also my interest in the main (MAIN!! In a story marketed as the origin story for Ursula!!) characters was less than zero. They were boring, cringey, and repetitive, and in the end I found myself skipping their parts almost completely in a vain hope to get back to Ursula, the only goddamn reason I got this book.
I usually try to find redeeming qualities in every book I read, and this one's is that it was short. I honestly cannot believe this thing got printed.

Poor Unfortunate Soul: A tale of The Sea Witch was a quick and easy read. It was interesting to learn how and why Ursula became the monster we all love to hate. Although we did find out all about her childhood and backstory, the story didn’t actually centre around Ursula. It focused more on brand new characters that weren’t part of a The Little Mermaid. Although I enjoyed reading, I found myself wanting to see more of Ursula! There was also a side to Triton which was quite different to the movie and I didn’t like it
