I just love a good domestic psych thriller but this was 200 pages too long. Really enjoyed the final act it got super intense and I can see why it’s one of the “classic” psych thrillers but maybe my expectations were a bit too high.

This was my first thriller book that got me into thrillers, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. This was also my first experience with an unreliable narrator, and coming at it from that angle was very interesting. There were some chapters where I was rooting for the FMC and other times when I was so fed up and disgusted by her that I wondered if we'd ever solve the mystery. But, ultimately, you want her, as the underdog, to come out on top. Finally, the end reveals all, and my only complaint is that it felt too much like a convenient movie where the villain explains everything to close up loose ends. However, I genuinely loved the thrill of this book, and will always recommend it to others.

When this first came out, I listened to it on audiobook. Normally, I’m not a fan of audiobooks but the narrators/voice actors did a fantastic job. I didn’t rank the book then, but probably would have given it 4 1/2 stars, if not more. Years later, and reading the physical book this time, I’m not as impressed. I still love the multiple POVs and the unreliable narrator, but I found the characters to not have their own tone, nor personalities to tell them apart. Also, I half-remembered who the villain was, so maybe the knowing made it less fun the second read. Overall, I still liked it, just didn’t blow me away.

A well-written, thoroughly enjoyable thriller. I got addicted right away and listened through in a couple of days. I liked the new angle on a classic murder mystery and would consider this one of the "better" page-turners.

As a recovering alcoholic the graphic descriptions of alcoholism were painful, so take note if that's a trigger for you.
