A very fast-paced, easy read that has been made into a movie starring Jennifer Lawrence as the main character, Ree. The female main character has such a strong personality for just being 16. The author also did a great job with the other characters. Very strong characters. I would even say that the setting was even a strong character in this short novel. The author did a good job with descriptions. At times, the author's writing style seemed poetic, and I was not a fan of those times

More like 2.5, not 3. Ending was more or less expected. At least the film is with Jennifer Lawrence. Bleak. At least it was short, 0.5 for that, so the 3 stars maybe justified. Not my type of book but I knew that beforehand. And I did not waste any money on it, a small relief.
I still have to watch the film. There is no reason for me to read another book by the same writer or read this again.

Well written but honestly just not terribly interesting. I think I went into it with too many expectations (based on a successful movie adaptation & a plug by Anthony Bourdain) but ended up just finding it average as far as the story goes. Just slightly better than okay. I liked Woe to Live On much better.

Strong story, strong premise, but a writing style and prose that felt so at odds with the setting and the dialogue that I kept getting ripped out of the work on the whole.

I like purple prose as much as the next guy (or maybe slightly more) but this was distracting

I nearly gave it 3.

I might write a full review as to why later.
