I'm really sad. I've never rated one of her books so low. I love everything she's done, but this book was not a good sequel. It felt rushed and messy. It was hard to follow and felt like a good portion of it was just them arguing and then having sex... Like come on. Work shit out. Everything felt petty and I'm really confused that they still love each other???? I was also pretty bored, but I had to finish it. I really hope that the next book is better. :(

This one had a LOT more sex in it and I didn’t really understand the twist at the end. It doesn’t make sense to me but I want to know more if only for clarity

I almost gave this a 3⭐️ but it got better towards the end. Idk what it is but I just didn’t love this one like I did King of Battle and Blood.

I thought the first book in this series was bad but fun, but the fun isn't as present in this sequel. While I have no issues with the darker themes and events, the focus on the emotional turmoil of the characters is too obvious. The word "trauma" is used too much and the characters have too many soliloquies about their pain.
It also veered hard into the "woman are so magic and special and men don't have these special vagina powers" as well as "all men are evil even though our two goddesses are controlling a lot of them" which sucks.

A small dumpster fire to be honest. I also absolutely hated that when I was 93% done with the book did they start to resolve some of the main plot points of the book.
Ok, so I tried to like it, I really did. I managed to finish but barely, honestly the smut was the only thing that kept me reading and that was a slog to read through by the end.
First, let me say this author is an amazing researcher. I have no doubt that much of this book’s content has several pieces pulled from actual myth & history. I commend her for that.
Second, I’m going to continue my honesty and admit that I read this series because of the black woman’s hands on this cover……
::sigh:: I’m going to speak from a place that many of you won’t understand but I have to say it. Please stay in your lane when it comes to writing from other race’s pov. Even if you are part of the BIPOC community, it will never ring true no matter how you do it. I have yet to come across an author who has successfully pulled it off.
It does not matter that this is a completely fictional story or that it is fantasy. The issue I have, is this character Isolde, was written like someone of another race and then given attributes that didn’t fit her, while leaving out key characteristics that would have DEFINED her race.
I complained about this with the first book. But when you make the decision to look through the eyes of someone who looks like me, you don’t get to be a tourist and sample what you want and leave out what you don’t like or understand. You better become me if you want to speak with my voice and since that’s impossible…… don’t do it.
Where was this girl’s hair texture? Where was any talk of the actual color of brown she was? If it wasn’t for the cover I would assume this person was white! Did she have any other features that made her black? Were her lips fuller or nose a littler more rounded? Her body type gets mentioned once and is just short of calling her fat……
I mean I would of taken a line about the people of Revekka not knowing what to do with her hair! But alas, she was the “norm”/ only example of diversity in the entire book series so far and yet NO ONE but her mama made it out of Nelani before BEING ENSLAVED.
Holy Shit don’t get me started on that!!!! The lowest hanging fruit has been plucked and literally ravaged with all the throbbing stereotypes……..
I digress.
This story had such great potential, not sure what happened. I think the author was doing WAY too much. All the monster attacks seemed forced and convenient. Plot was almost nonexistent. I’m not even sure what was going on most of the time. The big reveal at the end doesn’t hit like it should cause I’m so tired of reading this thing that I literally just rolled my eyes. I feel like one or two of the major plot points should have been enough to carry the entire 400 pages, instead there was just too much going on to pay attention to and a lot of chaos with my smut.
