Delightful essay which George Eliot skewers novels and tropes of her time, akin to criticisms many have about the flood of trash romantasy and romance novels of today. I read this as a follow-up to “Daniel Deronda.”
I listened to this on Hoopla and there’s a pdf version available on the George Eliot archive website: https://georgeeliotarchive.org/items/show/101

I stopped reading after Silly Novels by Lady Novelists because the other essays didn’t really interest me, but I enjoyed reading Eliot’s views on the subject. I liked her humour & irony, the opening was especially good
Here's the thing, I love George Eliot's contemporaries whom would fall into the category she critiques. The idea that female authors write female characters that are almost immune to flaws is true today as well...but it's also true that male writers do the same. In modern times we have the "cool girl", and in the early aughts we had the "manic pixie dream girl". Some might say that these constructs exist as consequences of a patriarchal society. I'm not sure! Probably. I think George Eliot has justifiable commentary, but to completely disparage the work of so many women writers is ignorant of what their work may have meant for female readers.
