Half of the essays were great. But the other half were very personal and rambly. With the insane eye for detail that Didion has they became very tedious to read, even though the writing is always strong.

A couple of Didion's essays focus on interests so niche I found it difficult to stay engaged (like the ones about California highways and aqueducts), and the piece on the women's rights movement was rather unfairly harsh considering it was coming from a woman in a place of social privilege. That being said, I loved the title essay, and the last two sections were simply captivating.
