The author starts the book describing 27 seconds when he was violently stabbed. It got my attention and the rest of the book was intriguing in all sorts of ways.
Salman Rushdie put a lot of thought into this book. It’s brilliantly written with what he and his wife, Eliza, personally went through after the attack. He described the physical pain which was insanely horrible. Of course, it changed him; it changed his family and his thoughts on paper. He said he has a second chance and will make the most of it.
Highly recommended.

It was definitely interesting but his flow of conciousness style of narration wasn't for me in the end and I think memoirs are just not my genre!

I don’t know what I expected, but I expected something different. I think the book was maybe too long overall and too full of descriptions medical procedures. I am not sure if the author has narrated audiobooks before but the constant noises of him breathing or swallowing was quite hard on my misophonia. Maybe some more editing of the audiobook would have helped.

How do you even begin to judge the memoir of a man who lived for over 30 years with a death sentence hanging over him? Or maybe it was more of a life sentence. Either way, his account of the attack and everything that followed is so powerful, it’s an easy 5 stars from me.
Some critics call Rushdie arrogant, unapologetic, even pompous — and honestly, I can see where they're coming from after reading this. But I also saw a ton of intelligence, insight, and sharp wit throughout the book.
