I knew very little about this story which made it very interesting despite the many differences between mine and Rushdie's worldviews.
"Art is not a luxury. It stands at the essence of our humanity, and it asks for no special protection except the right to exist. It accepts argument, criticism, even rejection. It does not accept violence."
Certainly an interesting choice for my introduction to Salman Rushdie's work. This was a gripping account of the aftermath of the 2022 knife attack on Salman Rushdie, offering profound insight into him both as a person and as an author. I found his writing thoroughly enjoyable, especially in the way it revealed his ability to weave fascinating associations.

“But now, looking back, hearing my broken voice insist on those things, the things of my normal everyday life, I think that a part of me - some battling part deep within - simply had no plan to die, and fully intended to use those keys and cards again, in the future, on whose existence that inner part of me was insisting with all the will it possessed.
Some part of me whispering, Live. Live.”
A truthful glimpse into coming face-to-face, unwillingly but forcefully, with one’s own mortality. This memoir recounts the year and change following Salman Rushdie’s attempted assassination. Rushdie examines how love is what strung his broken body and soul together as he recovered and continues to recover. His love for his wife, Eliza, for the mundane nature of daily living, for people and peace and hopeful prosperity. His love for writing and crafting words that can propel change and amplify voices that seem to only get quieter the louder they shout. Rushdie doesn’t shy away from speaking of his fear, his worries, his joy at knowing that his assailant is facing justice. It is a poignant read on how to continue on when death knocks at your door and then proceeds to change its mind. He writes as though he is speaking, eloquently and easily consumable, his voice ringing so clearly in your ears regardless of whether you have heard it out loud or not.
Incredible read, filled with resistance and all encompassing definitions of strength.

Incredible account from author Salman Rushdie about the vicious knife attack of which he was a victim on August 12, 2022, in New York. A story of survival, of regaining courage and, above all, hope to keep on living beyond tragedy.
