I was so glad to sink my teeth into this series after I was finished the outlander series. Another light but gripping saga to enjoy over many books, just what i was looking for!
I tried... I really did... but this book was just very slow. I mean, it was a bit interesting at times, but for the most part it was just robotic dialogue and characters that I didn't find interesting. The FMC was a bit whiney and I didn't really care what happened to her and the MMC was just as uninteresting. I had to MAKE myself read on, I kept hoping it'd get more interesting but I just thought it sucked.

this shit smacked so hard.. honestly think this was better than outlander tbh. the couple was emotionally mature but still preserved the tension, everyone was intelligent and capable and yet realistic in situations where they were out of their depth, the cultural things between the english settlers and the kanien'keháka were handled nicely and with respect. good shit!
plot did meander a little bit from thing to thing but that's fine imo, the story was about nathaniel and elizabeth just surviving, and there were enough arcs that started and closed that it did feel like a contained story.i kind of wish that the thing with the brother had been resolved a bit more neatly, but i do get that this isn't the kind of story where everything is neat and tidy, so it's nbd.

As an upstate New Yorker from the Albany area, I enjoyed learning more about my area as the characters explored cities, lakes and rivers near my home. The story line prompted me to do more research and chat with family members about new facets of history and geography that I hadn't come across before (I never do that!). With that said, I would have enjoyed an abridged version of this novel much more- reading on my kindle, I had no idea I was undertaking a 912 page "beach read" that took me quite some time to finish. This book plateaued for me, it was difficult to feel the highs and lows because the story kept going and going past natural stopping points that would have served well as conclusions.
Recommendation: Read Outlander instead.

My… My… what a book…
Almost 900 pages, 2-3 times longer than usual HR books. But there is no single part in this book that couldn’t hold my attention. The love story of Elizabeth and Nathaniel feels like it would never end and their story are so captivating. There were great dynamic in their story. The characters feel real.
There were
enough romance to keep me feel warm,
enough friendship to keep story whole,
enough drama to stir emotion, and
enough thrill to keep me on edge.
I can’t give enough star for this book, it’s one of the best stories I read so far (which is a lot ). And I Can’t be more excite that Elizabeth and Nathaniel story would not end for 5 more books. As for this book 800+ pages of their story still not enough and can’t wait for more.
The steam were pretty low for this book but it’s more about emotion. As for reader who prefers higher steam (like myself) I still recommend this book because the story will worth your time.

I thought this book was well written. It kept me flipping the pages. It's not a masterpiece or anything but I enjoyed it.
