This second entry to The Indian Lake Trilogy finds our Final Girl protagonist, Jennifer "Jade" Daniels, fresh out of prison and returning home to a new nightmare brought on by Dark Mill South and his rampage through Proof Rock, ID over the course of one blizzardy weekend. The setting felt very "locked room" to me with the poor weather and few locations which I think helped to "set the stage" a bit and up the tension slightly with the whole 'nowhere to run' kind of feeling.
This novel did have all the things you would think would be included in a slasher/serial killer novel:
Was there murder? Yes
Was there gore? Yes
Was there snarky dialogue? Sort of.
The problem I had with this novel was that there was SO. MUCH. FLUFF. I feel like there were almost 100 pages of extra, pointless dialogue discussing movies and characters that I just felt did nothing to move the plot along. Do we really need 20 pages of dialogue between 2 characters talking about movies in the middle of a murder rampage? I didn't think so.
Once we got into the 2nd act though, the story really picked up and I got re-hooked. I will still certainly read the conclusion to The Indian Lake Trilogy, but I think this was a bit of a drop-off from the original novel.

Incredibly powerful follow up to My Heart is a Chainsaw. Ups the slashery nature, ups the action, and ups the body count. The escalation of tensions and blend of horror genres is impeccable, and Stephen Graham Jones continues to bring a powerfully unique tone to the page.
Makes me terribly excited for the third and final story.
