WHAT!! I asked for something scary and intense and man did this deliver.
The Troop was my first horror read of the year and I really wanted to find something that could gross me out. The number of times the word "ew" came from my mouth was too much to count.
Perfect read for a cold winter night.

I literally want to bathe in bleach, wrap myself in gladwrap, lock myself in an airtight box & never come into contact with ANYTHING ever again!
Turtles and kittens and tapeworms, oh my! This was disturbing, campy, and just all around fun. I probably could’ve read this in one sitting, but I had to savor it. Hiiighly recommend for horror fans that can appreciate tropes and good Cronenberg body horror.

Absolutely nail biting experience, it felt like I was right there alongside the troop going through the horrors. It tapped into a fear I had as a child and put it perfectly on paper. SO good.
Four stars but with a five star narration.
The scariest thing about The Troop wasn't what the Stranger brought to their camp, not the physical threat anyway, but the threat to their sanity. Major warning that this story is graphic and gorey, even with most of the protagonists children. I can withstand a lot but even this made me a little squeamish. And Brill came with sound effects, shaky voices, shuddering screams all when appropriate. I don't know how it was articulated in the text but the narration made the experience all the more terrifying.
Shelving with other epistolary stuff, though it's mostly not, the occasional chapter is an interview or article that gives the story extra dimension.

Absolutely horrific and I had to turn off the audiobook several times to process. Fuck this book. 4.5/5

It pretty much confirmed what I thought. Purple prose, cliched characters, dumb decision by the only adult, and me being bored with it all.
Too many books to read for me to waste my time with this one because I was bored in the first 30 pages.

The gross-out factor is a little over the top, even for my normally very tolerant preferences. And the editing could have used just a little more polish. But, this is a really solid, unsettling, and frightening book, and I'm looking forward to reading more from this guy. The praise from Stephen King is well-deserved.
