This is my first book of the year, (thank you Nick Cutter). It was fun and disturbing ride. The plot was great, the tension was hiiiiiigh. The characters, some lovable, some I wanted to see slowly taken apart by a woodchipper. Which is easily what the author wanted, and executed wonderfully. I’m easily pleased, and I can suspend disbelief for the enjoyment of a read.
I’m excited to read more of Nick Cutters work.
Not for the squeamish by any means! Lots of descriptive gore, and unsettling things that happen in this book. But I will say, I’m pleasantly surprised at how Nick can write such poetic one-liners after such brutal happenings. It’s darkly poetic and is a nice touch.

Well written but many of the gory parts were obscenely graphic.

“The Troop" by Nick Cutter was definitely not for me. While the story's premise promised an intriguing horror experience, several gruesome scenes were too much for me, which caused me to skip over them. The intensity of the horror elements overshadowed my ability to connect with the characters or appreciate the narrative fully.
For those who enjoy extreme horror and don't shy away from detailed and graphic content, this book might be a hit. Unfortunately, for me, the gore was a significant detractor, making it hard to enjoy the overall story.

It takes a lot to make me squirm. This did the trick. Brutal, unrelenting, disgusting. Loved it.

I expected zombies and cannibalism but I was wrong! Something a bit more nefarious and terrible and intentional. Lots of body horror. Fun to read but there was a decent amount of exposition which I think took away from the suspense of present day happenings in the story. The book FELT tense and gory but that exposition made it lose traction for me.
Oh my. This is the most disgusting book I've ever read. I'm not really squeamish when it comes to body horror but this … this was on another level. I will never not feel alarmed any more when I'm super hungry.
That being said, apart from the great body horror, The Troop hasn't that much to offer which would make it an outstanding book.
The plot is really simple and lacking a satisfying conclusion. It downright drags on at times and its suspense is entirely building on the gore scenes and relying on shock factor.
The characters are mediocre at best, but calling them stereotypical clichés wouldn't be that far from the truth either.
Is it worth the read? Sure, if you're looking for a quick, old school horror tale with a lot of body horror and gore and don’t mind the occasional stupidity that comes with such stories.
But if you're expecting a masterfully woven, suspenseful horror novel, The Troop is the wrong choice for that.
Content warnings: gore, body horror, animal abuse, torture, bullying
