Before I picked this up I was warned that it was pretty gross and pretty gory.
I thought I was prepared.
I was not prepared.
This book was almost sickening to read and there were dozens of instances were I just had to put it down for a minute to process what I’d just read.
But it was also so good. It was disgusting, but I loved it. It was just so genuinely chilling and creepy.

Meine Meinung
Meine Bewertung
Ich gebe dem Buch 5 von 5 Sternen.

Had to stop listening to this book to finish Dawn so that this wasn’t my first read of the year. As a horror it completely succeeds. I was actually nauseous reading about the worms, one of the most uncomfortable books I have ever read. If that's what you're looking for then it’s great, even throws in a bit of lord of the flies style plot which worked fine. I also liked the narrative framing of the court transcripts of the fallout from this incident. The major issue with this is that it insinuates that the original patient zero was used in experiments for the Canadian military and purposefully released on that island with the boys to see how useful it would be in tactical situations. I just think that this fell totally flat. It felt weird to have some of the terror of the book be predicated on the Canadian government experiment on a group of white kids, most of whom are fairly well off. It felt laughably unrealistic for many reasons and especially because the Canadian government does commit atrocities, they are just against marginalized people. I don't know, that part felt weird to me.
This had a lot of potential and somehow that made me angrier at it
a very gross book but overall very well written. I couldn’t put it down and will definitely be reading more from nick cutter
Decently scary, and definitely great writing. I wasn’t surprised by the plot at any point, but it really delivers on detailed and horrifying descriptions!
The Troop is such a descriptive book that had me both disgusted at times and captivated at others. I only came upon this book as it was selected for book club and I’m glad I read it but I won’t be picking up another book by this author because it’s just not for me. It took me about 75% of the book to be interested in the story but that is more due to my dislike for the genre versus a critique on the author or the book. I did do plenty of research beforehand because I was warned about some of the TWs and knowing it was coming made it easier for me for read.
Incredibly creepy and horrifying but impossible to put down. I have not read a book that forced me to take breaks due to the amount of suspense and fear it physically caused me.
Fans of Stephen King would love this unimaginable body horror of a book! I truly would like to read more works from this author but am slightly terrified at what else his mind can conjure up.
