You know, I remember rather enjoying book 1 when I read through it. I think I'd been on a bit of a binge of YA post-apocalyptic novels and the first in the series was a departure I suppose, I dunno it's been probably a couple+ years at this point. Anyway, when I got into this one, the first maybe 75% of the book sorta wandered and meandered and otherwise petered around, now really going anywhere. The chapters were - I swear - 5 pages long, my kindle kept telling me it was going to take 3-5 minutes apiece, and there were like 75 when the book was done. Things never really felt like they were taking me anywhere until the last 1/3 to 1/4. The novel sort of crystallized at that point and it was like I was actually reading a novel.
It's not that it was bad, it just wasn't very good.

This book started a bit slower than the last, but boy did it pay off in the last 20%!! I’m super excited to see how the author ties up everything in the next book (and also to see how this romance will blossom)! By far my favorite part of the book, though, was Raffe adamantly defending the dignity of his sword who has now been dubbed Pookie Bear and kept in a teddy bear in a wedding dress scabbard lol. Can a sword who doesn’t even speak somehow become my favorite character?
This series really is nothing like I’ve ever read before and I’m loving it
I’m also surprised by how much I am lovinggg the romance

Well damn. I liked it a lot. SOOOOOOOOOO much better than book one. This is how you write dark YA, this is how you write a REAL MC and now I want the next one.
