Still solid, still enjoying the series...I just didn't see much of anything happening in this that really advanced the overarching plot. There are a lot of threads to tie up and just basic questions to answer and I am not sure one more book will do it all.

Actual rating: 4.5..ish.

The sequel to Angelfall, this book picks up just where we left off: Penryn is paralyzed, thought to be dead, and we just realized that Raffe had some pretty intense feelings for her. Also, Paige is back with her family but isn't quite...right.

I don't give out 5 stars freely, and although the actual rating is 4.5, I really did like this one. The world becomes more vivid and the characters become more developed. Penryn stays as...I don't know a good enough word...kickass as ever, which was a relief. I as afraid she'd turn into a damsel in distress, but not this gal! We also get a good look at what's going on with the angels, from their experiments to the politics, which I found interesting. While the first book was Penryn and Raffe running around trying to stay alive and find what and whom they wanted, this book has a little bit of that but much more in-depth.

As in the first book, this one also has a few (really well-written) macabre scenes,
Spoiler namely with Paige eating humans alive.
With the romance ramped up, it reads like a sort of horror-survival-romance-apocalyptic novel. Not for the slight of heart.

And while all that was happening, there were moments of comic relief. I loved the part where Penryn realizes she has inadvertently named Raffe's archangel sword Pooky Bear (see book one). The whole sword-thing was great. How did the author even THINK of this stuff? Sentient swords? Literary genius.

Let's talk about the romance. I don't care for books in the romance genre, but the relationship between Penryn and Raffe was excellently-written.. It's not too soppy and it's just the right amount of sweet for my tastes. In this book, we also see a different, scared, and weakened side of Raffe as he desperately tries to get his wings back. He's heroic and handsome, sure, but he's not perfect.

Towards the middle, Penryn is reunited with a woman she "saved" kind of on accident in the first book. The woman calls Penryn a hero, and she's all, "What? I'm not a hero." While she's not a typical hero, she pretty well fits the bill by doings the right thing for other people, over and over, whether it's organizing a major rescue mission or throwing herself into the ocean.

Not sure what's goin' on with Paige. Apparently she is "special," and for now I'm focused on getting over being totally creeped out at her cannibalism. I admit to thinking her a lost cause since she was taken apart and put back together again and who knows what else, but the last fight scene showed both her demonic and human sides. I still have hope that this little girl can find peace.

Let's end with Penryn's mom. I admire Penryn for caring about and looking after her mother after the horrible things her mom said to her and the embarrassment of living with someone with such a mental disability. I find this woman fascinating, and I can't help but want to know the motives behind her actions. Are they based on fact or is it entirely fabricated in her mind?

Now waiting impatiently for book three!

These books are a fever dream

4.75/5⭐️

The start was a bit slow for me, but when the story moved away from the resistance camp I was much more invested. The horror elements in this book were great, particularly the chapters in Alcatraz, which were very memorable and will definitely stick with me.

I don't have a lot to say about this one. I did enjoy it, but it was kind of unremarkable. Some things I liked:

Paige: It hurts that she's been turned into...whatever she is, and I can't imagine that things will end well for her, but I really loved seeing more of her in this book.

Dee-Dum: I just keep seeing the Weasley twins every time they come up, and that makes me happy.

Penryn and Raffe: It took forever to get these two back in the same vicinity, which was frustrating, but it was also nice to see Penryn just handle shit on her own. There have been multiple instances where she looked around hoping for someone to save her, found no one, and just shrugged it off like, "Fuck it, I guess it's just me, then." I totally dig that about her.
I will say that I haven't seen a ton of character development from Raffe yet. Maybe it's just a slow play and Ee's saving it all for the last book, but he hasn't really changed all that much.

I'm surprised that I don't have more to say about this one since I did read it all in one sitting, but....it was just that mid-point where everything goes from bad to worse and we know that all the real action is still to come. So. On to the next!

Short chapters, quick paced, packs a punch.

I love that this book doesn’t follow the usual tropes. For example, the girl doesn’t end up becoming some overpowered hero despite being a human. She’s aware of her flaws and shortcomings, she knows what she can or can’t pull off. And there’s this formidable sword, that has a lot of sass and personality. Did I mention the sword is named pooky bear.
And Penryn’s mom is so fun. She’s always up to something in the books. If there’s something super crazy happening, more often than not it’s her doing. I just realized don’t even know what her name is.

Raffe is a hot demonic angel and I’ll kill for him. Periodt.

3.5 STARS
I liked this second book more than I liked the first one.
I wished there was more time spent with penryn and Raffe together though. It took most of the book for them to find each other again.
Story picked up
Just didn't really connect with story or characters too well
I did like Penryn and Raffes reunion though

A middle book in a series that's actually good?? Stuff actually happens?? Yep.
