Penryn is not dead. As Penryn finds herself once again with the Resistance but this time with her family she still has a hard time coping with the loss of Raffe. Raffe on the other hand has only vengeance on his mind. Separated by forces beyond their control they are still able to take the fight of the angels to a whole new level.

I have to say I did not like this book as much as I did the first one, probably because of the separation of Penryn and Raffe for so much of it. I did like how the storyline progressed and how gruesome yet delightful the author is able to tell the story. When Penryn and Raffe were together their relationship popped out of the pages and was so tense and suspenseful, it was wonderful.

I can’t wait for the third book to come out!

Simply know: it's awesome. Buy it!

"But it's not until his eyes meet mine that a jolt
of recognition passes between us. I have no doubt
that it's Raffe. But he fights his recognition of
me. For a second, his defenses fall and I can see
the turmoil behind his eyes."

- Penryn and Raffe making eye contact for the very first time after he watched her die in his arms.

Do I really need to go on?

I have been waiting a long time to hold the sequel to "Angelfall" in my hands and now - after having read it in only 2 days - I am proud to give it my 5 star review. World After is a great sequel if also a little bit short on Raffe/ Penryn moments. Yeah, I know, the book is not supposed to be a romantic story but comon, we all have our hopes up for it to happen anyway. :)

World After starts right off where Angelfall ended: Penryn is still paralyzed resting on her mother's lap in the truck of the Resistance. Without giving too much information away, the second book revolves majorly around Penryn's sister Paige who has been turned in some kind of flesh-eating kiddo with supernatural powers. After losing sight of her sister due to a fight with the scorpion monsters we have already met in Angelfall, Penryn tries to get her back but gets caught by Beliel ending up with a bunch of other humans trapped in a prison. While being imprisoned, Penryn finds out more about the Angel's experiments and her sister. Meanwhile, Raffe is trying to get his wings back from Beliel.

It takes a long while until Raffe and Penryn meet again. Admittedly, I was a little bit sad to find out that the book was almost (well, about 3/4) over when they finally did. I love Raffe's character and was dying to find out more about him - I was especially looking forward to Raffe and Penryn interacting again because it is breathtaking to watch them fall for each other but having an eternity of distance and "it can never be" between them. While Penryn is much more willing to move forward, Raffe makes it very clear that it will never happen. Still, there are a lot of brief moments when I can't help but believe that one day his attitude will change - maybe because his feelings leave him no choice. We'll hopefully know more when book three comes out.

To sum it up: it is a great sequel that I have been reading with a lot of joy. Reading towards that moment when Penryn would finally meet her Archangel again was a nerve-stretching, thrilling and exciting journey and totally worth it. The few moments that Susan Ee gives us in the end are - as expected - breathtakingly beautiful, lovely, and enchanting. She remains true to her writing and story telling style which is a great bonus as many sequels tend to fail at that.

"Raffe holds me a second longer than necessary before he puts me down. And then it takes me a second longer than necessary to slide my arms away from his neck."

These are the little details and moments that happily make me give this book 5 stars! I could have subtracted one for the lack of romantic angel moments, but it just doesn't seem right. ;)

Everyone is convinced that Penryn is dead and when she wakes up, she scares everyone around her. They won a small battle at the end of the first book, but their work is nowhere near finished.

She went through hell and back to get her sister, but not that she has her, she can’t even look her in the eyes. She was messed with, from the inside out and she is not the same little girl, she once was. She can’t eat anything. She can’t touch food and is very starving. So one-day Paige attacks guys that attacked Penryn before. People are terrified of her. She looks to Penryn but she is frozen in place, so Paige runs.

After a little bit of time, she finally gets over what happened and goes after her, again. She has to make it right. Along the way she finds more about what happened to her sister, while she was with angels, where do those scorpion monsters came from and what is the purpose of angel’s attacks, at least a little bit of the answers.

And she finally runs into Raffe.

This book has singlehandedly put me behind on my reviews by about two months. Thanks, book! Also, I’m blaming the book but it’s totally me. Obviously.

I’m not sure I will actually be continuing this series. If not for my OCD (legit), and my “I might die if I don’t finish a book series” compulsion, or whatever the hell, I know I would have written it off already. It is too dark and scary for my poor brain right now, and the angel thing isn’t really all that up my alley if you know what I mean, even if I find it sort of morbidly fascinating the way that Ee is handling it. And boy howdy, if you were squicked by the age difference between Bella and Edward, or Buffy and Angel, or whoever else ancient magical being and young nubile woman, you’re really going to be squicked by the relationship between Penryn (who is in her late teens, I think she might be eighteen?) and Raffe (aka Raphael), the ANCIENT COSMOLOGICAL BEING. In the book’s defense though, it just sort of embraces all darkness, so the weirdness fits, even if it’s still very weird.

I feel like, though, it will make my brain feel better to finish, and I’ve already made it through two books, what’s one more? I guess we’ll see.

The one thing I liked unreservedly is Penryn’s sword, which used to be Raffe’s. She’s got this contrarian thing going on that is really most evident in the way she’s just taken over that angel sword like it’s hers no question, and uses it to bug the shit out of Raffe (and also be a badass). She names it Pooky Bear. I’m so into that, honestly.

So my rating on this is entirely based on my personal preferences. I still think this might objectively be pretty great, but I’m not capable of distinguishing. But hey, all three books are currently on Kindle Unlimited.

I'm so glad I came back to read this whole series! I reread Angelfall before moving right into this one (since its been years) and while I didn't love this one as much as the first one, I still loved it. These books are so fast paced and exciting and really interesting and different. I love Penryn and her crazy family and I love Raffe and all the complicated relationships they all have with each other. So good! This story went very differently from what I was expecting and I loved it. There was so much going on and I'm really excited to read the last one! But also nervous because I feel like there's too much to resolve in just one more book... And I'll be sad that it's over. But I must see what happens next!

Maybe a 2.5. But I was really disappointed! I loved the first one. I thought it was tense and exciting, a great concept. This one felt like an unplanned sequel. The first third, maybe even half, was meandering and pointless and difficult to follow. I found I didn't care what happened at all. It's still a good world and I liked some of the ideas but in general it felt haphazard. Also, not well written - I can't remember if the first was the same but at least the story in that distracted! Overall, not what I expected. Shame!

3.5 stars. This was good, I liked it, but I didn't love it as much as the first. There wasn't enough of Raffe, darn it! Even though Penryn was able to learn a bit more about him, he just wasn't present enough for me to be completely satisfied.
