I got a moderate insight into the treatment of mental illness in the 60ies in the US. However, the Racism in this book is (albeit not surprising for what I heard before about the author) making me question why this is suppposed to be "the" feminist classic you have to read before you die blabla. It was an interesting, informative and fast read and I have to say it was well written if you read it through a critical lense. It centered a womans perspective and as someone who has experienced some of the treatment Esther went through, I got something out of the book and I'm glad I reread it. I've read classics with similar racist undertones (duh, there are many), but again, why is it on so many Feminist Reading lists without any critical reference/ warning about the authors views, and I say that as a white, European woman. I'd recommend Hunger by Roxanne Gay if anyone wants to read a (very sad but essential) memoir about mental illness (here: PTSD and disordered eating) from a black Woman's perspective.

My copy of this book is absolutely full to the brim of underlined and highlighted passages, dog-eared pages and protruding tabs - which is undoubtedly a great barometer for how good a book is.

Sylvia Plath was a master with words and, in the novels best passages, you can tell (without prior knowledge) that she was first and foremost a poet and secondly a novelist. Her use of language is so evocative and makes you stop and reread her beautiful prose over and over again. I found myself savouring every letter printed in this book.

Narratively, this book is fundamentally very dark in places - morbid in the protagonist's (Esther's) approach to life. And yet this was strangely comforting for me in places. I would be lying if I didn't say there were points in the novel that I related to, with the book feeling as if you're contained within the character's head - much like a person contained within a bell jar you could say. Therefore it feels as if Plath is just sometimes writing what most people think but don't say. It is also nice to read about a protagonist who initially seems to all her life in order, before it slowly crumbling away before her.

A criticism could be levelled that the novel lacks depth within the plot, basically just focusing on the psychology of one individual. However, I do think this works perfectly in unifying the protagonist and reader - seeing what she sees and hearing what she thinks.

I would love to reread this book again, at a less busy period, where I can dedicate time more regularly to devour this book once more. And who knows, maybe that will increase my already high valuation of this book even further.

Up there as an all-time favourite for me!

if I had to describe the book in just a phrase, i’d say that it’s a challenging test on your emotions. I felt many different ways reading this book, that sometimes feel like I want to put it down and other times like I had to keep reading. Removing the obvious 1960s showing here, this book is what I would describe as almost perfect book, the entire book made me feel a certain way that I don’t think ive ever experienced before. A Must-Read

I found this book to be nothing like I had expected, but a decent read nonetheless. Given that it is regarded as a classic I had certain expectations going in, but was surprisingly wrong particularly in how I had imagined the book would end based on the way people talk about it. I found the first half of the book to be a bit slow and boring, but was intrigued to see it through to the end.
