A very good read marred by jarringly racist casual comments, which could be an intentional fault of the character rather than reflective of the author herself…(unfortunately I don’t think so). Otherwise I really appreciated Plath’s matter-of-factly tone and way of phrasing simple descriptions to imply other things.

I felt seen by Esther. I can understand why anyone who has not felt what Esther has felt would not like this book, but if you have it'll be like when you meet someone new and feel like you've known them your whole life.
I docked half a star for the racism, though.

This was such a complicated story to read. It was at times depressing, horrifying and gruesome, but also a perspective I never expected to read.

Very relatable depictions of depression and mental illness, but the book is undercut with some unfortunate racist language. Also, not the feminist iconography the modern reader proclaims it is, which is fine, but just don't expect that
