The novel shows a young woman’s experience of estrangement from a world that she often finds contradictory, hypocritical and oppressive. Written in an understated style, it is searingly honest, disturbing and extraordinary.

Highly recommended.

I can understand the hype that this book holds, but I do have criticisms. Though I know that this book had been written in a time where racism was more normalized, it doesn't change the numerous times racist remarks were made. The book started off unbelievably slow and took over 100 pages for me to feel interest in Esther's storyline.
Despite these beliefs, the book certainly holds a lot of revolutionary moments in it. I can appreciate it for what it was when it was released and how well it holds up to this day. I would recommend it to someone starting to get into classic novels.
