Well this was certainly a conclusion to a series! 😳 as much as this is the lowest rated book in the series, I still enjoyed reading this and I am definitely sad to see the series come to an end! This has a centred focus on "The Toll" and how this character came about! I was a little confused in the beginning by the vast amount of new characters but once I was into the book, I found myself reading through it at a decent pace! The ending had me in a chokehold and I honestly gasped so many times, the tabs could not keep up!! I was lucky to read this as a buddy read and I hope that everyone can enjoy this book as much as me!

it took me a while to get into this book compared to the rest of the series, it wasn’t until around 40% through (end of part 2) that i became wholly interested.

i think the jumpiness of the perspectives was more jarring than in the previous book, although i appreciate why this was done due to the many aspects of the world after events of thunderhead and a catch up of three years being needed.

goddards real name being
carson
is so fucking funny like yeah that’s the name of a man with the fuckin Audacity

i did enjoy the ending and resolution, and the way several things were left open ended, such as
citra’s revival, rand and tyger’s conversation being the same as with the constructs (although goddards death and supplantation felt too little for his character), scythes being akin to euthanasia

overall, the first half of book felt like a slog to get through, then there was intrigue and it felt like it was going somewhere only for it to fall a little flat and rushed towards the end. it just didn’t seem like a big climactic ending to the series especially since that’s what it felt it was building up to.

The author, muchlike Thunderhead, did a great job of keeping us in the dark about his ultimate plans. There were many moving parts, each of them converging at the same point in time, providing us with an ending that felt slightly... anticlimactic?

The action dragged slightly at times and reading felt slow, and I missed the faster pace of the first two books. I would have enjoyed
to see Goddard receive the retribution he actually deserved, his punishment felt way too light when keeping in mind everything he did.

I am happy to have finished the series, and excited to pick up Gleanings.

Can’t believe that this book was so good.
