My grandma recommended this book to me because I am a Special Education teacher who deals daily with children diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and ADHD who exhibit symptoms similar to Nick's. It feels wrong to write a review of this book with any commentary on Danielle and Nick, the life they shared, or the decisions that were made. I know that in publishing this book, Danielle opens herself to such commentary but I don't feel it necessary. The purpose of the book was to share her story and process her grief, and I can appreciate that. Unfortunately, I am also a person who appreciates good writing. And that (my fellow readers) is why, no matter how intriguing Nick may be or how fascinating I found it to read such a personal account of this family's trauma, I do not recommend reading this one.

While not an author I've ever read or ever expected to read I chose it because of its focus on her son's struggle with bipolar disorder as mental health even now needs brought out of the shadows and discussed without shame or blame. Having read it I'm still not a fan of her, exactly. This story proves no amount of money can protect you from your genetics. It can buy you every advantage most can't dream of but in the end it still might not be enough to save you.

La storia vera di uno dei figli della scrittrice Danielle Steeel, che descrive in modo toccante la gioia e il dolore che toccano in sorte a un malato di depressione bipolare e ai suoi famigliari.
Un libro di profonda e toccante umanità.

Such a sad book, but such an important one. I can't stop ugly-crying. As a parent, my heart breaks for Danielle, and I wonder how she is doing with Nick's loss now, some 20 years later. Has time healed her even partially, or is it an open wound that never gets better? I hope I never personally find out, and I'm so sorry for her loss.

Heartbreaking to read. I cried through most of it. But I hope it helped Danielle in some way to write it. I am glad I got to know about her son Nick. And I hope this book can help those understand about depression and the demons people have that fight this sickness.

Such a tragic illness and a real eye opener to the struggles of mental illness
