This book was frustrating for me. There were a lot of interesting moments and ideas sprinkled throughout the book, but the constant character jumping and cliffhangers made it excruciating to read. The characters felt very stereotypical as well, with nobody really standing out to me. I'm glad I read it, as the good parts were really good, but I will not be reading it again.

This book was super weird and creepy - perfect for fall reading. My issues were with how many points of view the story switches from, and how many characters there are to keep track of. The ending was completely insane though!!

2.5*

Something the Bright Lands executed really well was highlighting the more earthly horrors of small town life and the homophobia, racism and general ignorance that can happen. The book doesn't shy away from making you feel uncomfortable.

For me, the supernatural element was too subtle and on the periphery for most of the book, and the ending felt rushed. When you take that part away, this felt like a pretty standard whodunit story, which isn't really my thing.

Messy structure; an abundance of pointless characters; poorly written. I read an interview with the author who stated they had culled down a longer version of the text for publication: I felt as though another 50% could have been cut to strengthen the story.

Read e-book. This book was....interesting. Fortunately, I had read several reviews before diving in and was aware this book took an over-the-top weird and sci-fi twist at the end. The first 70% of this book was basically a police procedural with a lot of characters that I honestly couldn’t keep straight. I’m glad I didn’t listen to this on audio (several reviews mentioned that). I guess I expected more suspense/horror since this was compared to a King novel, but I found it a bit boring and the end was just plain weird. Honestly, 3 stars was pretty generous, but I’m glad I finally tackled it, as I would have just kept wondering what it was all about.

A wild ride

This book was INSANE from start to finish. I think I saw it described as “Friday night lights meets Stephen King” and I couldn’t put it better myself. Add in a touch of an 80s slasher flick and you’ve got this weird, twisted, gross, enthralling thriller that I’ll be thing about for a longggg time.

I'm so sad about this one because I was really excited to read it...but from the beginning I just couldn't connect with any of the characters and wasnt engaged in the story. I dont know why...all the pieces were there but it just didnt happen.
