Very good. The last story "midnight theatre" felt out of place and wasn't as entertaining yo read. The art style is very interesting and at time beautiful yet sinister. This edition is superb and is just as beautiful under the dust jacket. Well made and Sturdy.

Gaiman does it again! His imagination is a thing to behold. I was so immersed in this collection. I loved how it flowed like a dream and there were many dramatic punches that hit just right. It was really rewarding to have this ongoing in between my reads.

I wish there was more Sandman present in the stories. There would be long stretches without him and I was always waiting til he showed up again because I love how Gaiman characterizes him. My favorite portion was when he’s searching for his stuff. A personal preference is the horror aspects were a bit much for me.

I thoroughly enjoyed this first volume of Gaiman’s run of Sandman, and I can’t wait to read the rest of them. There are some dry stories inside of this collection, especially compared to some of the incredible highs in other stories, but the characters and dialogue kept me hooked. The art is gorgeous, and the rigid respect for the medium is extraordinary. It’s funny to have a vague suspicion confirmed, as this time last year I read all of Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing; I couldn’t help but feel this story’s format was similar to it, but brushed it aside to avoid the “getting a lot of Boss Baby” allegations. As it turns out, Gaiman in the afterword immediately acknowledges Swamp Thing’s influence. A lesson for us all.

This text uses graphic novel paneling for thematic texturing in a beautiful way. The transitions between panels and pages all bleed together and skip around in a very beautiful dreamlike trance. So many characters’ faces change just slightly enough from panel to panel (a mainstay of comics, yes, but it really lends itself here). It really captivated me for the majority of the stories. The lesser stories are still fine in their own right, but I really felt the difference in quality. The Sandman’s characterization is easily my favorite, and I really wish we spent even more time with him. I appreciated the breaks and set-ups through the human characters and their situations, but there were too many long stretches without him. I’m hoping we see him interact with more deities/manifestations in later volumes instead of just solving human problems. I recognize that it’s most likely the main appeal for most people as is often the case with fantasy-based stories; however, I am far more interested in his voice and situations than the human characters.

REALLY great. each chapter is basically its own story (and they were of course serialized originally into individual comic issues). sometimes it's an occultist history of the 20th century, sometimes Morpheus goes to hell, sometimes he plays basketball with his sister, you never know what's gonna happen

I clearly thought I was going to love this more than I did: I committed to the deluxe edition, after all. It's not bad, but it's a bit too all over the place for my taste. I hear it gets better as it goes, but I have way too many other comics and graphic novels to get through and after a while picking this up started feeling like a chore.
