The Winemaker's Wife by Kristin Harmel
Enjoying this read as I feel like I hit the jackpot, 2 stories in one book.
Ines is in France and wants to help not only the family wine business but also the resistance, by keeping Germans out.
Love hearing of the chambers underground, sound so cool to wander around.
They are also used in other ways.... she heads to her friends house sometimes spending the night and her path crosses with the Germans...
Story also follows Liv who's left her boyfriend and her aunt came to her rescue by taking her overseas.
She is fascinated by the grandmother's lawyer, who has papers for her. Liv has no idea what they are all about but one day at lunch the grandmother acts odd.
Liv is able to see the pictures on the walls and knows the grandmother was in one of the but is not sure of the connection.
At times very terrifying. Love how the stories come together, didn't see it happening at all!
Love this author's works, books are long but it's the story she tells that make it all super worth while. Can't wait to read more of her works.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

I loved this book! The story weaves itself through two time periods, modern day and World War II and ties it all up in a suprising bow. The story is a love story in many ways but it's mostly a story about survival and resistance in the time of war.
Inès is a young naive wife who can't find her place in her husband's winery. She feels useless and insignificant on the winery and feels ignorant about the truths about the war. She wants to feel important and needed so goes looking for love and attention elsewhere, not realizing that affairs during wars have terrible consequences.
Inès husband Michel and Celeste, the half-Jewish wife of the chef de cave, find themselves growing closer as the German's start to invade France's countryside. Their developing relationship puts them in great danger with even greater consequences.
The results of the actions of these 3 during the war span a lifetime. The tale tells of the love, heartaches, struggles, and regrets of those decisions.
This story touches your heart. It makes you cry for those who struggle and smile for those who survive. It will stay with you even after the story ends.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing this advanced copy. The opinions are my own.

Good WW2 historical fiction because characters aren't perfect.
This book was gifted to me by my very thoughtful boyfriend who thought it sounded right up my alley (and he was right!) It is a WWII historical fiction novel set in Champagne, France during the German occupation. It takes place at a Champagne house and is told in three points of view. The first is the wife of the vineyard owner, Ines. The second is Celine, wife of the chef de cave (winemaker) and also Jewish. Third is Liv in the present day piecing together the life of her grandmother Edith. There is a lot of character development and description to start with but then the plot really picks up. I don't want to give too much away, but the Nazis come to the region and start rounding up foreign born Jews, there are worries about Celine's safety. There is romance and infidelity, there are secrets and lies, and high-stake risks are taken. There is also the mystery of why Grandma Edith is so determined, yet unable, to share her story with her granddaughter.
I appreciated the "further reading" section that the author suggests at the end of the book too including both fiction and nonfiction reads.

Interesting World War 2 history but some of the dialog and character development was weak. Wasn't fond of the author making the cockolded spouses seem stupid and untrustworthy.

The Winemaker’s wife by Kristin Harmel focuses on 4 women. Three in Champagne France during WWII– Inès, her best friend Edith and Céline wife of Theo their head wine chef. Then with 99 year old Edith, we meet her granddaughter Olivia in modern day France. We meet the three women as France, Remes , Ville-Dommange & Champagne are being occupied by The Nazi’s.
This book is full of betrayal, love, resistance, haunting memories, and terror during the deadliest times for the Jewish people, which Céline is and those who protect them.
I was a little hesitant to read another book about WWII because I had just finished reading Sarah’s Key and wasn’t in the mood for another “heavy” read. I’m glad I started in on The Winemaker’s Wife although the era is WWII the setting is far different and so it was easy to move my heart and mind to another book. The Winemaker’s Wife although equally as heavy is different, even with the strength that Sarah had, these three women showed a different type of strength. There were times when I wanted to scream at Inès, for her foolishness and then I was surprised by the turn of events Ms. Harmel creates and started digging into the story more. Like the Wine Cellars of Maison- Chauveau this book becomes deeper and deeper, twistier and twistier, and full of hidden secrets,
Ms. Harmel takes a much written about time in history and makes it impossibly so much different than anything else I have read about during WWII.
I believe this will be read in many book clubs around the world.

I liked this book far more than I expected. It was unexpectedly entertaining, educational, romantic and surprising.
