3 stars!
This is a conflicting book for me to review. I really enjoyed the first book in the Chestnut Springs series, more than I usually do with contemporary romances these days, and was really looking forward to reading about grumpy old Cade.
While I did mostly enjoy the book and the characters, I personally did not like the age gap aspect.
Every time I started vibing with Willa and Cade, I remembered when she was 13, he was 26. Even if that age gap doesn't seem big in the context of what happens in the book, years and years later — it's still really gross and I couldn't get past it lol. ESPECIALLY given the level and intensity of the smut (HELLO WHY WAS THAT ALL NECESSARY WHEN THEY KNEW EACH OTHER FOR TWO MONTHS????)
It just felt cringe and crass and wasn't for me. Also, it straight up made Cade seem like a pervert, which is at odds with the rest of his personality IMO.
Same for other aspects of the book, such as Willa's personality at times which showed just how immature she is. (The underwear thing is weird. Fight me.)
But I found their story interesting and I didn't mind the third act twist, actually. I thought it was fitting. Also they're fucking dumb if they thought that wouldn't happen with how much they were fucking, just putting that out there.
I also found the dedication of this book, about women not tearing each other down, very interesting given how some of the women's relationships are portrayed in Heartless. Don't get me wrong, Talia sucks, but it felt kind of hypocritical. Anyway I'm hoping the other books in the series aren't so weird.

Nothing happened in this book and what did happen was stupid. Her dad threatens his career and she tells him that they need space and he needs to go “put himself back together” on his own? Like what? It just didn’t make any sense at all.
