Maybe I’m grading this tomorrow harshly. I guess it’s more like a 2.5, but I was disappointed by this last book in the series. I’m not sure what exactly was the problem but right from the start this volume lacked a lot of the light tone of the prior books. Also a huge portion of the final half just seemed like one endless fight scene, which got pretty tedious. The first three books felt like a fun adventure story, but I just didn’t get that feeling from this one. Oh well.

As Marat sieges the tower, Senlin finds himself stuck inside the beast, unable to help his friends. While Edith finds herself facing off against Marat in what can only end in loss. The tower is under siege, and its destabilization is inevitable.
Craft-wise, this taught me that it is easy for the MC to become lost in the narrative in favor of more interesting side characters in longer series. The story's arc starts with Senlin, but by the end, it feels like he's been pushed to the wayside. I think if the focus had remained on him, the story would have felt more wrapped up and fulfilling, but because we were given so much time with side characters, it felt unfulfilling when we were given little about their end situation. I think this made the story unwieldy and quite impossible to succinctly wrap up within this final book. If it had remained more focused, I don't think this issue would have happened.
Senlin kind of becomes stagnant by this book, and I did not love it. I also felt like we were given very long and sprawling subplots for side characters that felt cheap after the end of the book when they are completely dropped. I still love this world and the general story happening, but this book didn't wow me like the others. 3/5
