Acting Sheriff deputy Ben Packard is called to an early morning shooting. Bill, a well-liked man has been shot. Ben was always chasing easy money and always up to something. Another fun thing about Bill, his ex-wife, and current wife are sisters and he’d gotten in over his head with some high-stakes poker. With so many suspects, will Ben be able to figure out who killed Bill? Will other secrets be revealed?

This book was really hard to get into, but the writing was good. I did find it overly descriptive but that’s not bad if that’s what you are looking for. This is a small-town police procedural, and it is done well. I didn’t love but I didn’t hate this book - it was a solid middle of the road read for me. I will read more from this author in the future. I also appreciated that the male main character was gay and lived in a small town. It was written very realistically, and I appreciated that.

If you are looking for a solid small town police procedural, then I hope you check this one out August 15th!

Thrilling! Fun to read a book set in MN

Acting-Sheriff Ben Packard is called to the scene of a home invasion in the early morning, finding Bill Sanderson shot in bed. Bill is a well-liked local who chased money his whole life, leaving him on a path of broken hearts and bad debts. But everyone Acting-Sheriff Packard speaks to has no clear motive for wanting Bill dead. As Packard begins his investigation, tragedy strikes the Sheriff’s department, forcing Packard to make a difficult decision: step down as acting Sheriff or run in the election for full-time Sheriff. Packard doesn’t know the hidden history of small-town Sandy Lake, and as his investigation continues to unravel bad blood and old secrets, he gets closer to the truth and puts his own life at risk.

WHERE THE DEAD SLEEP is the second book in the Ben Packard series. Although this novel could be read as a standalone, I think that the reader would lose out on the overall context of Ben’s character and his character arc.

I really like Ben as the main character of this story, and I feel like this book really defined his character more clearly. Ben has this underdog vibe that I absolutely adore and I am so eager to see how his character will continue to grow in the next book. I loved seeing how Ben’s feelings changed over the course of the novel as he contemplated his future and ruminated over a big decision he will have to make soon.

As for the plot, the investigation is filled with secrets and old rivalries whose reveals make for some great twists and turns. It’s well-placed with a compelling plot. The ending had me shocked and eagerly awaiting book three!

Book two in this series (and for this author in general) was just as great as the first one! Everything is there, all the information you need to solve the case alongside Packard, and you just have to work on piecing it together like he does as the actual detective. It's quite believable, and Packard even goes through the issue of assuming something and not asking the right questions early on in the investigation, which would actually happen in real life. The "background" plots are exciting in this as well, which will carry over nicely into the third book, and I can't wait to see where it all goes from here. Absolutely recommend!
