I really like this author & his main character and the story. This book did not solve who shot [at] the Sheriff but sets it up as coming in next book. And I can't wait to see how Ben reacts to the incompetent deputy being elected as sheriff & now his boss. Hurry up with Ben Packard #3!

The mystery is good enough but the book is filled with anti-fatness and too much love for the police.

I’m so far behind. I’ve been reading slowly and less heavily than usual. I appreciate getting this ARC from NetGalley and the publisher, and I apologize for being late on getting this posted.

While the first book in the series was a race against the clock thriller, this is a more traditional mystery. We have a crime with lots of suspects but no clear answers.

I like the general feel to these books. Small towns, regular characters, mysteries/thrillers - good mix of elements. I’ll definitely read the third.

Note that there are some loose threads here but the main mystery is resolved. There’s enough though to keep readers hooked for a series.

I love that this series is a continuation. You hear about how the last book ended and what has been happening prior to the current case that Packard is following.

I love the small town vibe where everyone knows everyone and all their business. The current case is a bit out there. There’s a wealthy family that owned the bank back in the day. The father committed suicide years ago and all three daughters got a trust fund. One sister drank it away, one savored it, and one used it to make a business and continues to profit from it.

You learn what happened all those years ago after a murder occurs and the mother who has dementia mentions something from years ago. Packard is able to look into the case and find little clues before figuring it all out.

I thought the pacing of the book was well done. I never felt bored while reading. I enjoy Ben Packard as the MMC, he’s level headed and has a good eye to detail. I can’t wait to see what the next book has in store for us. We were left with quite the cliffhanger.
