Joshua Moehling has become an auto read author with the release of this second book of his. With this book, we get to know Ben Packard as well as the town of Sandy Lake so much more. Moehling has done an excellent job of creating unique and well-developed characters that I can't wait to read more about. The mystery is well executed, and the suspense keeps me turning pages. I can't wait to see what Moehling does with Ben Packard next!

Deputy Ben Packard is called to a home invasion where he finds Bill, a greatly loved local, shot dead in his bed. Who’s guilty? Who’s innocent? What secrets lie in this small town?

I loved the small town feel of this book and the representation of a gay acting sheriff. However, it did take me awhile to finally get into this book. It was far more descriptive than I prefer my books to be. The last bit of the book though, was fast paced and right up my alley.

I never read the first book but don’t feel like I needed to. I will give the third book a chance as this book won me over at the end.

Thank you Netgalley and Poison Pen Press publishing for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Where the Dead Sleep is officially out on August 25th, 2023!

I will be actively looking for the next book in the series. Packard is a great character who I want to read more about. If you are looking for a good series with great plots and excellent character creation, this is for you!

This is the second novel in the detective Ben Packard series. I hadn’t read the first. I think it would have been better to read it in order, but I understood what was happening even so. I’ll read the first and look forward to the third.

In Where the Dead Sleep, acting sheriff Packard is called to what appears to be a home invasion with the dead body of Bill Sandersen. Bill spent most his life drinking and gambling, but he doesn’t appear to have any enemies who would want him dead. As Packard investigates the case, there are missed shots and more dead bodies that further complicate his ability to unravel the clues and solve the mystery.

This is well done. NetGalley provided an advance reader copy of this novel, which RELEASES AUGUST 15, 2023.

I didn't realise how fond I was of everyone's favourite gay small town sheriff until diving right back into his world in this installment of the Ben Packard series. I enjoyed the plot and found it compelling enough to finish this one in just a couple of sittings, but I really adore Moehling's characters and their relationships so dearly that I think I could read about them doing just about anything. The small town dynamics are just as on point as they were in the first book, and I found this follow up just as intriguing and immersive as its predecessor.

I was well into this book before I realized it was book 2. I’m usually very strict about not listening to books out of order but I was far enough along and I wasn’t having any problems following the set up so I kept going.
It was difficult for me to get into the story, however, because of the narrator. She is fine, but it’s a male main character so it makes zero sense to use a female narrator. This is such a rare occurrence in audiobooks that I don’t understand why this choice was made? I won’t be continuing with the series because of the narration.

I need more!!! How did it end like THAT????

New to me author and I loooooved it! Started it and finished it today. At the beginning I had an idea it was a sequel, at the end I confirmed it. Lol. This is book 2, I borrowed book 1 and will start it Monday probably. 😅 Thrre should be a book 3 in the future based on the ending of this one.

Great main character, good dialogue, great plot, despicable townsfolk, enjoyable townsfolk... story kept me guessing until pretty close to the end. Very well done. :)
