A great Young Adult romance that explores issues of feminism, the patriarchy, and self-confidence.

Jenna lives in a world where men get powers and become superheroes. Everyone else... well, everyone else needs saving. When she is caught up in a prophecy involving her town, a new hero emerges, and she is the first person he saves. The Rules dictate that she is his Love Interest, the Damsel to his Hero. Jenna decides she will have none of that, but fate has different ideas. After all, they're connected... right?

A simple story with an interesting spin on superheroes and what it means to be a hero. The characters or plot didn't blow me away, but it had my attention from beginning to end. The romance was adorable, and the slow burn (and secrets) were well-paced throughout. Jenna's relationships with her friends and sister were beautifully done.

A story with diverse representation that explores how far a system is willing to go to keep order and the resistance that can come from the most unexpected places.

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

I will always read a good superhero and villain book. Even more so when the lines between the 'good' guys and the 'bad' guys are blurred. If you like that too, then you'll have to pick up The Love Interest. It's a story that explores what we would to to find the answers and what we would do to hide the answers. Beginning with a fun hook - in a hero's story even though we don't want it - it's a book that makes you think about what we believe. There's more spin to the story then we think.

The last thing 17 year old Jenna wanted to do was to become a Love Interest. The HPA (Heroics and Power Authority) has a negative past when it came to women Love Interests. They never come out whole, they’re torn apart and only used to make the heroes look good. It was an added bonus when the Love Interest die young, so they can “stay pretty forever”. The entire system was extremely misogynistic and unfair for women all around.

“The perfect Love Interest is brave enough to support her man. And beautiful enough to brighten his darkest hour” Women with powerful abilities were perceived as protecting their “fragile” bodies for childbirth to benefit the heroes (who were always male).

I absolutely loved the plot, it was such a refreshing take on the superhero genre! It walks the line of who’s really good or evil? The heroes may not be as “good” as you think. The pacing was a little weird but it was great overall.

As for the romance, I liked it. Very slow burn and realistic enough for two teens. No spice THANK GOD. The FMC was so damn gullible but I had to keep reminding myself that she’s 17. The MMC was a little off, but he was so indoctrinated and brainwashed I couldn’t blame him. Their connection throughout is confusing and intense. I can’t wait for book 2!

This includes:
Black heroine
Chinese and British hero
Sweet teen romance
A twist on the hero genre
⚠️ TW for panic attacks from fmc

Funny, sweet and refreshing! I definitely recommend it - it was a nice palate cleanser for me.

if you’re looking for a romance book, then this book isn’t for you. romance is pretty much, secondary, or dare i say, tertiary in this book. and whatever we got was very lukewarm and wasn’t properly developed. jenna went from wanting nothing to do with blaze, to wanting to kiss him in three seconds flat. so random.

anyway, if you’re looking for a short superhero fun, with quite the interesting world building then by all means, go pick up this book!
