acovington's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 16%

Got 15% in and was constantly distracted by trying to think what this was fanfiction of.
Whichever internet entity recommended this to me, I really don’t know why.

This book was an absolute ride from start to finish. It somehow felt way longer than it actually was (which I won't count as a bad thing), and even though there were only a few instances of things actually, majorly happening, it felt like there was always something and nothing going on. That sort of irritated me for about the first half, but I suppose that makes sense for being more introduction-oriented.

On that note, it took me quite a while to get into the swing of who was who. I got a bit turned around from time to time trying to figure out what was happening and to who, possibly because there were so many characters with a majority of plain names to keep track of in the same room. That, and the sport itself is hardly explained. I had to look up fan explanations to make some semblance of sense of it (seriously did not realize it was even indoors until halfway through their first game, nor that the field was encased in plexiglass(?)), though I am going to give it some grace in that 1) I can probably attribute some of that to me being a little dumb and 2) you're more supposed to focus on the characters and plot rather than the mechanics of the movements in exy. So, won't dock it too much for that despite the rant.

Though I can't seem to get a concrete grasp on the characters and their personalities just yet, I think they're starting to solidify more for me at the end of this book. I'll see how that holds up in book 2. Let's see what they've got!

oh.... you know what? I might be into this.

So first of all, I thought this was a gay romantasy with a weird cover. I took it on a recommendation from someone who normally reads fantasy. It's called the ____ ____ Court. I- yeah, I was like "Okay... so there's lacrosse... where's the magic tho? Someone's gonna cheat at the lacrosse with magic?"

Anyway, and then I thought it was just sports and was like "Not gay. Not romance. Not fantasy... huh??" And then I went to check on something here, and it IS labeled as LGBT.

I had to google who the pairing was even going to be. It is NOT who I was expecting... but I'm all the more excited because of that.
Bro, he's gonna get with Andrew????? Andrew The Medically Subdued Crazy??? Oh- oh, that might be fucking stellar, actually.

As much as I'm laughing at myself for having thought this was a fantasy novel, I actually had to kind of put myself into my Fantasy Reader headspace to enjoy it. There's a huge cast, and I think we're actually going to find that every single character is hugely important and relevant and fleshed out (which makes things overwhelming at first). There's a made up sport. Fuck it -- that's the magic. I don't know the rules! I'm sure there are rules. I'm sure I'll learn about them in time to know anything important that involves following or breaking them! There are are these families at play, this secret dynastic power. Read it as a fantasy. It makes so much more sense that way.

I spent 75% of this book on the edge of a DNF... but fuck it I think I'm in. I think I'm converted.

Andrew is motherfucking crazy. Kevin is massively suspicious.  I want to know where this is going actually!! Damn. They got me.
