He makes writing this beautifully look easy.
For everyone that ever wants to read this book you should first know a bit about the authors 's life and about the history of Colombia, this would make a complete different reading experience, this book is great and treats many real problems but from a different point of view.

i can't remember when i finished this but i love it a lot and can't stop thinking of it... possible 5 star... however i did forget that i finished it and so i think that prevents the .5 jump it needs
4.5 stars
I devoured this beautiful, mystical, chaotic book. There will never be another family that leaves an imprint on my imagination like the Buendías have. This book felt like a magical and confusing spiral, with what seemed like 100 characters who were instantly recognizable while each being wholly unique. The language and narrative style of this book may not be for everyone (there really isn't much of a linear plot, but SO MUCH happens!!) — but for me, I want nothing more than to tie myself to a tree and read it all over again. And then throw myself into the sea with all of my emotions.

i really enjoyed this style of narrative as if someone is telling you a story. i enjoyed the cyclical elements and honestly didnt find the repetition of names all that confusing (although having a family tree at the beginning helped!)
i also enjoyed the magical realism, especially the initial conflict between science and magic. plus the physical manifestation of metaphors was nice. i liked the yellow butterflies or the trail of blood for example.
some very memorable characters here as well.
an important book in the history of literature: glad i read it!

A book that, immediately after punching me in the stomach with the unrecognisable state of things after years of incremental change, kicked me to the floor with the circular repetitions of history.

Maybe I gave up too early, or maybe the English translation doesn't capture the vibe, but I didn't understand what was going on. Too confusing and not enough happening for me. But in general I prefer plot driven books than 'family saga' types so maybe just not my style of book.
