Ummmm I’m glad I didn’t pay for it.

(Got a library loan)

As far as erotica goes, I’m assuming that this is pretty up there? Like the WRITING itself is good. But…can’t there be erotica that’s both good writing and good erotica and good for the soul?

Cuz I feel like this is pretty much junk food for the soul.

These erotic tales dive deep into the depths of desire, making incredibly concise observations about female sexuality. Knowing the context of these texts (as explained in her diary) I don’t know exactly how to approach some of the topics discussed. It is clear that she wanted to write things to be shocking and uncomfortable and maybe challenging. Despite that Nins sensual and passionate style of prose is undeniably captivating.
Groundbreaking discussions of queer and intersex people.
However personally I still got bored after reading around 2/3 of this book, because after a while I found it a little repetitive. Still, an unapologetic embrace of desire.

I wanted to read something by Anaïs Nin and this is absolutely NOT what I should have read. Nin wrote this erotica for a man who didn’t like romance and wanted her to skip to the sex – the foreword is basically her ranting about the man who commissioned her to write this work. There’s a lot of (unsurprisingly) incest, as well as depictions of rape/assault. I do not recommend.

So, this is an erotica book. At first I thought that it would be plain erotic story, just describing sex, arousal, sensuality etc. But I couldn't have been more wrong. First thing is that Nin wrote this book in 1930s for an old male client who remained anonymous to her. Our guy here asked Nin to write pure sex and cut out anything poetic and anything that doesn't include sex. But still, we can see Nin's poetic work in this collection of short stories.

This book can trigger some people as it contains pedophilia, incest, rape, bdsm, necrophilia, grooming etc. But in my opinion, this is the beauty about Nin's work. She has touched upon subjects about which we normally wouldn't even want to think because of their ickiness.

She has explored the sexuality without any moral obligations, and put out the hard truth that if we as a society hadn't made some moral rules, then the sexual beast in people would have been uncontrollable. The way she has narrated her stories, somewhere it felt like completely male driven, which was given considering the fact that she wrote them for a male client, but at instances we also get a glimpse of female desires and sensuality which is still considered a taboo.  She explicitly described female passion, desire and sexual hunger which is as potent and strong as a man's but it remains buried deep inside their heart.

If one reads these stories, one wouldn't get aroused as people might assume because it is erotica. But instead, one will get sucked into a plethora of emotions ranging from shock to outright disgust, from awe to oh, one will realise that there is much more to than one can realise. Nin has showed so beautifully and shockingly the way gets muddled when abandoned to the beast of sex, how the lines get blurred and all that remains is a powerful desire to feel and seek pleasure in any way possible.

This book was way out of my comfort zone because of all the necrophilia, incest, rape, infidelity, pedophilia etc. But I couldn't put it down either. Overall, I fell in love with Nin's writing style.

If you want to read it, just be aware about the triggers, I've already mentioned them several times.

wtf did i just read?

I don’t know how to qualify this. It decided to read this, one because I wanted to read explicit sex. Two, because of the story behind this book that made it so interesting. Also, I have a pull for banned books.
Basically, in the 50 Shades of Grey era, I wondered what was like the erotic literature back in the modern classic times.

This books is super explicit. The very beginning of it, I though I wouldn’t be able to read it. The first two or three stories were beyond gritty, and the underage thing was a bit much disturbing.

As the stories continued I kind of appreciated the plot and characterisation revolving around heavily sexual plots. So I did find it interesting, that despite being very descriptive there was something else than porn. But at some times it made me very uncomfortable so idk. It is interesting to read I supposed.

These short stories were all written to a man, with the sole purpose of arousing him and it shows.

It wasn't that they were badly written. It was that there was practically no plot whatsoever beyond a bunch of characters in all these exotic settings such as Peru and then sex, sex, sex.

Don't get me wrong. I am a fan of this genre when the author is able to do a good job. But I need a developed plot and that seductive ambiance that draws you in and doesn't let go.

In 'Delta Of Venus', it was more of the same and after a while I had to stop reading, because it was starting to get more than a little boring.

Long story short, I think men will love this book. Women obviously need something more.
