More intrigued by the literary aspect of Anais Nin's work than the subject. This book showed me something new

Read this years ago. Think Anais Nin was the reason I found and now love Erotic reads.

This is a stunning novel (in both good in bad ways) but all I have to say is wow because I've definitely never read anything like this before and that's what made it fascinating. This book is sort of like when you can't look away from a car crash; it's disgusting, disturbing, but at the same time beautiful and even elegant.

I haven't read erotica in this more formal and vintage style before, and it's interesting to read because it was largely written in the 1940s and I liked to see perspectives/portrayals of sex from that period. Many of these stories were disturbing and even gruesome (literally PLEASE look up the tws if you want to read this and are sensitive to fucked up sex stuff) but at the same time the language and descriptions as well as scenes were interesting to read because she's such a talented writer. Anais Nin doesn't shy away from any scenario. Also I really liked some of her descriptions of the vagina and the poetic experience of sex itself. Definitely an unforgettable read but I can't say I'd recommend it.

I didn't know what I was getting into when I picked this book up. I knew it was erotica and I knew it was from a time before my time. However I was unaware of how vulgar it would be and quite frankly I was unprepared for it.
That being said I ran into some stories that made me so uncomfortable I've blocked them out mentally but at the same time some of the stories were so moving and true that I could not put the book down. This is what I look for in a book. It pushed my boundaries, taught me things and entertained me. I loved the roller coaster. It was very interesting, even the parts that I did not enjoy as much.

I don't find incest or rape or men slashing at vulvas with blades sexy. maybe I don't understand erotica???

update: there's one scene where three women have sex and I was really into that.

the thing is, these are very interesting short stories. but they are not sexy. if the word erotica weren't on the cover, this would be three stars easily.
