The way the foundation for this book was built from the beginning in The Heir is remarkable. That foundation continued to be built on further in The Rebel and in The Bully. The Spy can be read without reading the first three books in The Kingmakers Series. However, I think most readers will prefer to wait to read this one after they’ve read the other three books in the series first to see if they can pick up on anything that might let them guess who the spy is. I’m planning on rereading those first three books to see what hints I missed.
I went through an emotional roller coaster reading The Spy. I experienced so many emotions reading this book: happiness, sadness, shock, excitement, anger, contentment. The Spy has great character development with such interesting characters, an exciting plot with plot twists, intense emotional connections in both in romance and in friendships, betrayal, beautiful illustrations, an incredible playlist and steamy scenes.
I consider each book in The Kingmakers Series five star reads and each book in the series definitely worth reading and rereading. When I first read The Heir, The Rebel and The Bully, I wasn’t aware there was such an intricate plot being woven underneath the main plots of those books. The Spy reveals it all. I look forward to reading what this talented author writes next.

The conclusion is here- and oh my, it is so bittersweet. Not only does Sophie reveal just who is the mysterious “SPY” but she also tackles the gargantuan task of weaving together threads she’s been weaving since before book one...and perhaps even before that. The conclusion is equal parts action packed and sexy- and loaded with the characters we just can’t get enough of.
The mafia and suspense component of this story really shines- we have a lot of secrets, mystery, twists, huge revelations, and danger. The action itself was really beautifully plotted and vividly created- I was on the edge of my seat. And I loved how Sophie brings in so many other characters and weaves together so many plotlines into one hugely entertaining climax. Parts of this book played out like an action move and spy thriller- Sophie really nailed the suspense narrative. It unfolds like a beautifully brilliant puzzle.
Multiple elements come full circle here, and the only downside is that I felt like the romance side of this story didn't quite connect with me. While I loved both the hero and heroine as characters, I did not particularly feel their chemistry or connection. I needed more dynamics and progression. Part of that, of course, is that the spy is understandably witholding parts of himself, which is an intentional barrier to their vulnerability and connection, but I felt like we didn't get much nuance or substance, like they truly knew each other- more just lust to in love, and without more focus on their connection, I just felt lukewarm about them as a couple. We are privy to a window into another love story (in our mystery 3rd POV) that in some ways had a more engaging romantic element than our main couple. I did love the characters, and both have thoughtful character arcs that brought the characters themselves depth and nuance. I was rooting for their HEA, I just felt the romantic side of their love story got muted a bit in the explosive other elements of this book.
The epilogue though was straight magic. And the entire story reminded me just how unique, original, and entertaining this series is. I'm so happy I discovered it. Hang on tight- twists galore and lots to take in in this complex finale! I’m so not ready to say goodbye to this amazing world!

Ohhhh the emotions!! What an amazing story to wrap up the series! I loved it so so much! Everything I want to say would be full of spoilers so I'm leaving my review with this, one of my absolute favorite series! If you are contemplating reading any Sophie Lark books I HIGHLY suggest it!!
medium-paced
I loved the concept of not knowing who the spy was and being reaffirmed that it was eho it was because I always picked up little odd things in previous books.
It was only ok. Wasn’t dark enough. If I’m gonna read about mafia hogwarts I want it to be dark and twisted. I liked the connection with “the spy” and nix. And I pretty much called who the spy was only from book one. But- I didnt care so much for the descriptors of the gun fights etc. I guess I like angst more than action.
