This is the first (although not chronologically) of Bernard Cornwell's highly acclaimed Sharpe series.
The series follows Richard Sharpe as he rises in the ranks of the British army through the early 1800s. I'm not a big lover of reading long battle scenes; frankly, they put me to sleep. But lots of people
hold this series in such high regard and this novel seems to be everyone's favorite. I won't read any more of them, though.

A candy read, through and through. The romance is ghastly, some plot points are rushed through to meet word count, but this is just a blast to read.

Enjoyed this one more than the last few, although Sharpe's love interest is as boring and powerless as ever. Come on, Cornwell!
