This one is my favorite in the series so far.
I love Cornwell brining deeper insight into secondary characters, especially sergeant Harper's. Sharpe becomes both more defined person and more self aware one - this makes his character even more fascinating.

I decided it was finally time to start this (currently) 21 book series. I am not sure if this was a random pick or if I had known that it was the first Sharpe's book written but it did end up being the first book in the series I read.
From Sir Henry Simmerson, commanding officer of the South Essex that Sharpe and his 30 riflemen are attached to and Christian Gibbons, lieutenant and nephew of Simmerson to Sir Arthur Wellesley, General of the Army, Josefina Lacosta, a Portuguese noblewoman who Sharpe yearns after, and engineer Major Hogan, all the characters, though predictable, are still engaging, admirable or hateable and often amusing.
The story is as you would expect from Mr. Cornwell, action packed, angst ridden and ending with a massive battle.
Definitely a book and hopefully a series to recommend.

Loved this entry in the Sharpe series, and as usual learned more than I had known before about the Duke of Wellington's campaign against Napoleon.

When I was in university, there was this bakery near the school that sold the most mouth-watering, toe-curling, delicious donuts (I still think they laced that stuff with something). They were addictive and I spent so much money buying them everyday. But something would happen, I’d forget about them or lose access, then one day I’d stumble my way back and find myself addicted again. (Sadly I graduated and have no easy access to them. Le sigh)
Reading this series feels just like that. These books are so weirdly addictive. Combine the lovable hero, non-stop action and the absolute masterful narration by Rupert Farley and you have a dangerous combination. I’m about to spend more money to get the next book in the series and I can’t wait!
Again, Sharpe + The Riflemen= Best Squad Ever

Another rousing Sharpe adventure! Once again we find Sharpe humiliated by the actions of his "superiors." It's up to Sharpe and his misfit band of Riflemen to right the wrongs and recapture glory for their adopted regiment, and in unusual fashion the tale is told lightening fast. The standard doe eyed woman sub plot remains, but is largely used as a device to further Sharpe's actions in battle, which keeps the plot moving nicely.
All in all, a fine example of the Sharpe series and one that leaves you reaching for the next installment.
My greatest nitpick is the seemingly fluid treatment of Sharpe by Sir Wellesley. Sometimes cold and disdaining, other times warm and sincere it is hard to discern how the man truly feels about our Captain Sharpe, but alas it is a small portion of our otherwise heroic and rousing tale.
